Melania Trump stole the spotlight as she watched her husband Donald give a speech at the UN yesterday - and people are obsessed with her reaction.

The United States president, 79, and first lady, 55, visited United Nations headquarters in New York yesterday (23 September) to speak to the UN General Assembly.

And he didn't mince his words, that's for sure.

Undeterred by a broken escalator and teleprompter, his speech turned into more of a 'rant' as the Republican leader boldly told the other UN countries that they are 'going to hell'.

Discussing immigration, the president said: "When your prisons are filled with so-called asylum seekers who repay kindness with crime, it's time to end the failed experiment of open borders.

"You have to end it now. See, I can tell you. I'm really good at this stuff. Your countries are going to hell."

He also took aim at London mayor Sir Sadiq Khan, calling him a 'terrible, terrible mayor' and talked about the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, calling on Europe to 'step it up' by cutting off Russian energy products.

While all of this was going on, Melania was photographed with a huge grin on her face, clearly enjoying her front-row seat.

One person wrote on Twitter: "A lot of grumpy faces at the UN today!! Nice to see a happy Melania enjoying President Trump's speech!"

While a second joked: "Haha, Melania’s stealing the show at the UN like a VIP in the front row, while everyone else looks like they’re napping through the drama!"

And a third added: "She's smiling because she knows his 15-minute speech just turned into a 55-minute roast."

"Melania just watching her husband torch the EU," penned a fourth, alongside a slew of laughing emojis.

Meanwhile, others chimed in with: "I love that she is the only one smiling/laughing" and "I think she said Give Em Hell Donnie".

And someone else joked: "First Lady Melania Trump smiling ear to ear. When your wife knows that by cutting your teleprompter they're going to have to listen to you ramble for an extra hour about whatever comes to your mind."

For those who aren't familiar with the escalator and teleprompter, errr, incidents, Trump had quite the unlucky day at the UN.

As soon as he and Melania arrived, they got on an escalator to make their way upstairs, however, it came to an abrupt halt as soon as they stepped on it.

Then, to make matters worse, Trump announced that the UN's teleprompter had broken, moments before he was about to start his speech.

Keeping composed, he joked from behind the podium: "I don't mind making this speech without a teleprompter - because the teleprompter is not working. I feel very happy to be up here with you nevertheless and that way you speak more from the heart."

Trump added: "I can only say that whoever is operating this teleprompter is in big trouble," which earned a laugh from the room.

The president brought it up again later as he joked: "These are two things I got from the United Nations, a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter. Thank you very much. And by the way, it's working now."

Stephane Dujarric, a spokesperson for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, said the escalator malfunction happened because someone in front of Trump accidentally set off a safety mechanism on the escalator, causing it to stop.

And the teleprompter? Well, Dujarric said: “Regarding the teleprompter, we have no comment since the teleprompter for the US president is operated by the White House.”
