Greenland politicians issue brutal dig to Donald Trump takeover plans

The politicians of Denmark have issued a comeback to Donald Trump in light of his repeated talks of wanting to annex Greenland.

Apparently, 2026 is starting off with the US attempting to take control of the tiny nation, but NATO allies are not happy about the conversation.

Neither is Greenland, or the nation’s owner, Denmark, for that matter.

It all began when Trump threatened a 'takeover' of the country, which hasn’t been taken well.

According to local news, in response to Trump, a petition was filed by citizens of the Scandinavian nation this month to purchase California in retaliation.

Leaders from Greenland, Denmark and around the world, are taking a stance condemning Trump after he refused to rule out the possibility of using military force to take control of the country.

In a bid to pressure NATO allies with agreeing to his wants, Trump then hit eight countries with a 10 per cent tariff charge and has since been branded as a ‘gangster’ by the UK.

So, it has all been very interesting.

However, now, in light of his visit to Switzerland, the Greenland politicians have issued a scathing response to Trump’s efforts.

Greenlanders have said that they ‘don’t want to be Americans’ and will decide their own fate, per the self-governing Danish territory.

This comes after Trump warned the US would ‘do something whether they like it or not’.

As 95 per cent of citizens have rejected the idea of being under the US, per a 2025 poll, the leaders of five political parties in the Greenlandic parliament issued a statement on 19 January, stating: “We don’t want to be Americans, we don’t want to be Danish, we want to be Greenlanders.”

The group also included Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

“The future of Greenland must be decided by Greenlanders,” the statement added.

They said: “No other country can meddle in this. We must decide our country’s future ourselves – without pressure to make a hasty decision, without procrastination, and without interference from other countries.”

The statement was signed by Nielsen, Múte B Egede, and Pele Broberg, Aleqa Hammond and Aqqalu C Jerimiassen.

At a meeting with oil and gas executives at the White House on that same day, when talking about why Greenland was crucial for US national security, Trump told reporters: “We’re not going to have Russia or China occupy Greenland. That’s what they’re going to do if we don’t. So we’re going to be doing something with Greenland, either the nice way or the more difficult way.”

Ever since this kicked off, Greenlanders have been wearing MAGA hats, except, instead of 'Make America Great Again', it has been said to mean: "Make America Go Away."

Tyla reached out to the White House for comment.
