France has defended George Clooney after US President Donald Trump slammed him for becoming a citizen there.

Trump seethed on New Year's Eve after finding out that the 64-year-old Hollywood A-lister and his wife, 47-year-old human rights lawyer Amal, were awarded French citizenship.

The celebrity couple, who currently live on their farm in Brignoles, in the south of France, were granted citizenship because 'they contribute, through their distinguished actions, to France's international influence and cultural outreach,' the French government explained.

As we say, Trump took major issue with the news that the Clooneys, along with their eight-year-old twins Alexander and Ella, were becoming dual US-French citizens.

Taking to Truth Social, he ranted: "Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France, which is, sadly, in the midst of a major crime problem because of their absolutely horrendous handling of immigration, much like we had under Sleepy Joe Biden."

Trump continued: "Remember when Clooney, after the now infamous debate, dumped Joe during a fundraiser, only to go onto the side of another stellar candidate, Jamala(K!), who is now fighting it out with the worst governor in the Country, including Tim Waltz, Gavin Newscum, for who is going to lead the Democrats to their future defeat."

The president even ripped into the Oscar-winning actor's career, angrily writing: "Clooney got more publicity for politics than he did for his very few, and totally mediocre, movies.

"He wasn’t a movie star at all, he was just an average guy who complained, constantly, about common sense in politics. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

According to Deadline, Clooney responded to the insults, saying in a statement: "I totally agree with the current president. We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November."

He was referring to the midterm elections in the United States, which are due to take place in November.

They happen mid-way through every four-year presidential election cycle and give voters a chance to decide which party controls Congress.

France's Foreign Ministry has explained that the Clooneys were eligible for citizenship under a French law that allows for the naturalisation of foreign nationals who contribute to France's international influence and economic well-being.

"They maintain strong personal, professional and family ties with our country," the ministry said.

"Like many French citizens, we are delighted to welcome Georges and Amal Clooney into the national community," it concluded, giving the From Dusk Till Dawn star's first name a French twist by adding an 's' at the end.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, who signed the naturalisation decree, likewise defended the move

"It's a big chance for our country," he said.
