George Clooney has issued a savage response after Donald Trump tore into him on social media on Wednesday (31 December).
The 79-year-old US president spent his New Year's Eve writing a blistering rant aimed at the 64-year-old actor and his wife, Amal, after they were awarded French citizenship.
As per the BBC, this information was made public in the Journal Officiel, where French government decrees are published.
The celebrity couple currently live on their farm in Brignoles, in the south of France, and they were granted citizenship because 'they contribute, through their distinguished actions, to France's international influence and cultural outreach,' the French government explained.

The Clooneys purchased their estate in France in 2021 and in an interview with Esquire in October, Clooney described their farm as their primary residence - a decision the parents made with their children in mind.

However, Trump appears to have taken somewhat of an issue with Clooney and his family, including their eight-year-old twins Alexander and Ella, becoming dual US-French citizens.
Taking to Truth Social, he penned: "Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France which is, sadly, in the midst of a major crime problem because of their absolutely horrendous handling of immigration, much like we had under Sleepy Joe Biden."
He continued: "Remember when Clooney, after the now infamous debate, dumped Joe during a fundraiser, only to go onto the side of another stellar candidate, Jamala(K!), who is now fighting it out with the worst governor in the Country, including Tim Waltz, Gavin Newscum, for who is going to lead the Democrats to their future defeat."
The president even ripped into the Oscar-winning actor's career, angrily writing: "Clooney got more publicity for politics than he did for his very few, and totally mediocre, movies. He wasn’t a movie star at all, he was just an average guy who complained, constantly, about common sense in politics. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
And now, according to Deadline, Clooney has responded to the insults, saying in a statement: "I totally agree with the current president. We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November."

The star is, of course, referring to the midterm elections in the United States which are due to take place in November.
They happen mid-way through every four-year presidential election cycle and give voters a chance to decide which party controls Congress.
The public feud between Clooney and Trump comes just as the actor recalled in a new interview with Variety that he was friendly with the right-wing leader before he entered politics.
He told the publication: "I knew him very well. He used to call me a lot, and he tried to help me get into a hospital once to see a back surgeon. I’d see him out at clubs and at restaurants. He’s a big goofball. Well, he was. That all changed."
Clooney was also critical of ABC and CBS' decisions to settle defamation lawsuits filed by Trump.
He said: "If CBS and ABC had challenged those lawsuits and said, ‘Go f**k yourself,’ we wouldn’t be where we are in the country. That’s simply the truth."
Tyla has contacted ABC, CBS, and representatives of George Clooney for further comment.
