George Clooney has last laugh after Donald Trump slammed him for becoming citizen of another country

The Oscar-winning actor's decision at the Golden Globes was widely seen as a dig at Trump

George Clooney just took a subtle swipe at Donald Trump while on stage at the Golden Globe Awards last night.

American comedian Nikki Glaser hosted the 83rd annual award ceremony for a second year in a row on Sunday evening (11 January).

Celebrities from around the world flocked to Los Angeles to honour the best in film and television of the past 12 months - and there were some big winners.

One Battle After Another and Hamnet bagged the top gongs in the film categories, while for TV, Netflix's Adolescence continued its winning streak.

Although he was nominated for Best Actor (musical or comedy), Clooney, 64, missed out on the win, which instead went to Timothée Chalamet for his performance in Marty Supreme.

However, the actor did present the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture (drama), on stage alongside Don Cheadle, which was won by Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet.

And during his speech before announcing the winner, he decided to speak a little bit of French, after he officially became a citizen of the country recently.

As per PEOPLE Magazine, he said “Bonsoir, mes amis,” which translates to him wishing his friends in the crowd a good evening, before adding: "C'est un honneur d’être ici," which means: “It’s an honour to be here'”

Reacting to the unexpected moment, one Twitter user penned: "George Clooney just turned his 2026 Golden Globes appearance into a subtle jab at Donald Trump after their New Year’s Eve feud over his French citizenship."

While another added: "Why is George Clooney speaking French."

You can catch the moment below:

It comes after the Ocean's Eleven star, his wife Amal, 47, and their eight-year-old twins, Ella and Alexander, recently became official citizens of France.

The celebrity couple bought a farm in France back in 2021 and have described it as their primary residence, as they see it as a more suitable location to raise their children.

The news of their citizenship was made public in the Journal Officiel last week, where French government decrees are published.

And one person who didn't take too kindly to the news was US president Donald Trump, who spent his New Year's Eve penning a brutal Truth Social post about the Clooneys.

He wrote: "Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France which is, sadly, in the midst of a major crime problem because of their absolutely horrendous handling of immigration, much like we had under Sleepy Joe Biden."

The Republican leader savagely added: "Remember when Clooney, after the now infamous debate, dumped Joe during a fundraiser, only to go onto the side of another stellar candidate, Jamala(K!), who is now fighting it out with the worst governor in the Country, including Tim Waltz, Gavin Newscum, for who is going to lead the Democrats to their future defeat."

"Clooney got more publicity for politics than he did for his very few, and totally mediocre, movies. He wasn’t a movie star at all, he was just an average guy who complained, constantly, about common sense in politics. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

And Clooney responded in a statement to Deadline, hinting at the US midterms as he hit back with: "I totally agree with the current president. We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November."

The beef continues...
