'Furious' Donald Trump called out for 'jealous' remarks about Barack Obama winning Nobel Peace Prize

Obama, the 44th president, won the prestigious accolade back in 2009

In a fiery White House rant, Donald Trump this week slammed Barack Obama for 'doing nothing' to deserve the Nobel Peace Prize he was awarded back in 2009.

For those in need of a reminder, the Republican's presidential predecessor was bestowed the almighty honour 'for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples'.

More specifically, Obama was credited for his vision of a world free from nuclear weaponry, as well as his call for new relations between the Muslim world and the West, and plan for the withdrawal of American forces from Iraq.

Almost 20 years on, however, Trump seemingly still has beef with the decisions made by organisers to choose Obama for the prestigious accolade.

Hosting a press conference in the Oval Office yesterday (9 Oct), where he discussed his own pursuit of the same prize, the 79-year-old took aim at the 44th president's achievements.

"He got it for doing nothing," Trump spat of the former Democrat leader, specifically referencing the fact he was handed the accolade just weeks into his term. "Obama got a prize - he didn't even know what - he got elected, and they gave it to Obama for doing absolutely nothing but destroying our country."

Unsurprisingly, his remarks haven't gone down too well with a number of social media users.

One critic wrote: "You can hear the jealousy dripping through every word. Obama lives rent-free in his head, pays no utilities, and just redecorated the place.

"We’re 15 years out and Trump still can’t cope."

Another agreed: "Donald Trump is the most needy, insecure man on the face of the planet."

The right-wing leader's comments come in the midst of speculation that he could also be set to receive a Nobel Peace Prize next year for his controversial efforts to bring a ceasefire to Gaza.

Trump announced earlier this week that both Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase for peace in the Middle East. The former's military confirmed that a ceasefire in Palestine took affect at midday (local time) on Friday (10 Oct), and that troops have been withdrawn from the area.

The American's plan dictates, however, that Hamas release all 20 living Israeli hostages being held in the area, in exchange for around 250 Palestinian prisoners and 1,700 detainees in Gaza.

In his Oval Office rant, Trump gushed of his own achievements: "I've stopped eight wars, so that's never happened before - but they'll have to do what they do. Whatever they do is fine.

"I know this: I didn't do it for that, I did it because I saved a lot of lives."

Sadly for Trump, however, this year's Nobel Peace Prize has now been awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader and pro-democracy campaigner María Corina Machado.

Announcing the news earlier today, organisers praised her 'tireless work promoting democratic rights... and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy'.
