Donald Trump ignites theory on why he wore large bandage on his ear after attempted assassination

A year ago today, shots were fired at the US President at an election rally in Pennsylvania

Where were you when Donald Trump got (almost) shot? Cast your minds back to last July, when we unsuspecting Brits had settled into a balmy summer evening, only for all of our breaking news alerts to go off at the same time, declaring someone had tried to assassinate the now President of the United States.

While he was a Republican nominee for the 2024 US elections last year, Trump was on a stage at a rally in Pennsylvania when the attack took place.

Multiple shots were fired at Trump by an AR15-style rifle, wounding him in his upper right ear as he dropped to the ground and was shielded by the Secret Service.

Naturally, Trump milked the moment for all it was worth (and it may have even helped seal his victory in the November election), and he wouldn't let the voters forget that he was almost assassinated by enlisting the help of a comically large bandage.

The 45th and now 47th US President decided to dramatically appear in public again with an oversized bandage covering the ear that was grazed by the gunshot.

But given its wrapping, people aren't convinced that there was much of a wound to cover, and the large bandage was more for dramatic - and political - effect.

Over on Reddit, people have been mocking the whole thing, with healthcare professionals such as nurses weighing in to say they would never dress a wound that way.

To make matters worse, some Redditors have been likening Trump's oversized bandage to the huge plaster Italian politician Benito Mussolini plastered to his nose after someone tried to shoot him.

In case you missed it, Mussolini was also shot in an assassination attempt back in 1926, with the bullet grazing the bridge of his nose.

Like Trump, he also reappeared on stage shortly after, with the huge plaster, attempting to project an image of strength and resilience. As you do.

People aren't convinced though, and there's been a theory over the past year that this was all for show.

One Redditor wrote: "That bandage wasn't there to cover a wound, in Trump's case, it was there to cover the lack of a wound."

Others marvelled at how Trump's bandage had been stuck on. One nurse wrote: "As a nurse I've bandaged a hell of a lot of wounds and I've never had one look like that. It looks like a teeny tiny Maxipad stuck to his ear, so weird."

Another echoed the sentiment, saying: "I’ve been one too and i cannot imagine that whatever that is was applied by any kind of medical professional. Is it stuck on with blu tac?"

Guess we'll never know.
