Donald Trump has issued a rare apology - but it's not for what you'd expect.

The 79-year-old US President prompted widespread backlash from the public and high-profile figures for sharing a 'racist' video depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as monkeys on Truth Social last week.

The video in question began with the false claims that Dominion Voting Systems helped steal the 2020 presidential election, before jumping to an AI-generated image of the former President and First Lady’s faces superimposed on two monkeys’ bodies.

Many demanded that he apologise for this; however, no apology followed. He deleted the clip, but, when asked about it by reporters on Air Force One, doubled down that he hadn't done anything wrong.

As reported by The Independent, Trump said: “No, I didn’t make a mistake. I looked at the beginning of it. It was fine."

Instead, something the world leader deemed appropriate to say sorry for was his previous endorsement of Oklahoma’s Republican Governor, Kevin Stitt.

Trump lashed out at the politician after the National Governors Association (NGA) announced it wouldn't be holding its annual meeting at the White House.

As reported by AP News, Stitt told his fellow governors in a letter sent earlier this week that the White House intended to limit invitations to the association’s annual business meeting to Republican governors only.

He allegedly wrote in the latter: "Because NGA’s mission is to represent all 55 governors, the Association is no longer serving as the facilitator for that event, and it is no longer included in our official program."

Unimpressed, Trump wrote on Truth Social on Wednesday (11 February): "When Kevin Stitt, the very mediocre (at best!) RINO Governor of Oklahoma, was losing his Election to a Democrat, primarily because he did a bad job, he called for my help.

"I Endorsed him, and he won. Sorry, my cherished Oklahoma, to have done that to you!”

For context, Trump said in a statement in March 2022: "Kevin was a very successful businessman in 2018 when I first endorsed him. Now, he is a fighter for the incredible people of Oklahoma. Kevin Stitt has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”

The President explained in another post: "The invitations were sent to ALL Governors, other than two, who I feel are not worthy of being there."

He added: “I did not invite the Governor of Colorado, who has unfairly incarcerated in solitary confinement a 73-year-old cancer stricken woman (A nine year term!), for attempting to fight Democrat Voter Fraud, plus the foul mouthed Governor of Maryland, who fraudulently stated that he received Military medals, A LIE, is doing a terrible job on the rebuilding of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, and has allowed Baltimore to continue to be a Crime Disaster."
