The kidnapping of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro has sparked shockwaves around the globe - but did you know it's also bizarrely led to an unexpected trend?

For those who need a catch-up, following an order from American President Donald Trump, US forces captured Maduro on Saturday (3 January) following strikes on the country.

The Venezuelan President is due to appear in a New York court on Monday after he was indicted, alongside his wife Cilia Flores on charges of 'narco-terrorism'.

Shortly after Maduro and his wife were brought to America, Trump made the shock announcement that the US would be running Venezuela.

As per the BBC, the strikes came after a US pressure campaign against Maduro's government, which the Trump administration accuses of flooding America with drugs and gang members.

The Republican leader blames Maduro for the arrival of hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan migrants in the US.

In a press conference, Trump said: "We’re going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition."

He added: “We don’t want to be involved with having somebody else get in and we have the same situation that we had for the last long period of years, so we are going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition.

“And it has to be judicious, because that’s what we’re all about. We want peace, liberty and justice for the great people of Venezuela, and that includes many from Venezuela that are now living in the United States and want to go back to their country, it’s their homeland."

While this is all, of course, very serious world news, as we say, it's unexpectedly led to a fashion trend - yes, really.

Although Maduro undoubtedly has a lot more pressing things to worry about right now than his wardrobe, pictures of him captured showed he was wearing a grey Nike Tech Fleece tracksuit and sliders.

The image was shared by Trump on Truth Social as per Hypebeast, showed the blindfolded Venezuelan leader aboard the USS Iwo Jima.

His choice of attire has become somewhat of a viral meme and according to reports, there's actually now been an increase in people googling Nike Tech Fleeces.

The publication also reports that the sudden unprecedented demand has caused the product to sell out across multiple sizes on Nike’s US webstore.

Reacting to the news on social media, one Twitter user penned: "JUST IN: The 'Maduro fit' has sold out."

While a second and third added: "Nike is the real winner today" and "Nike's best ad in years."

And a fourth joked: "The concept of a dictator getting abducted in the middle of the night from his home country wearing a nike tech suit. You literally can’t make this s*** up."

Meanwhile, others chimed in with: "His ‘look’ has sold out at Nike" and "NICOLAS MADURO WAS WEARING THE NIKE TECH THIS CANNOT BE REAL."
