Upon arrival at the scene, authorities discovered a truck with an attached campervan
They noticed the passenger side door showed damage in line with what you would expect from a shotgun blast.
Police say the driver of the truck parked outside a convenience store and went inside to make a purchase, leaving the dog inside.

Another passenger also got out, and stayed stood near the truck.
After exiting the vehicle, their dog moved from one side of the car to the other, which triggered a loaded shotgun, causing it to fire.
According to Fox News, the the shotgun blast reportedly passed through the vehicle’s front passenger-side door, before travelling through the parking lot before hitting a woman several yards away.
Police said a shotgun pellet from the gun hit the top of her right arm, which was resting out the window at the time.
Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
A family member took the injured woman to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Police issued a statement following the shooting: "The Scottsbluff Police Department reminds the public that per Nebraska State Statute, it is illegal to travel with a loaded shotgun in a vehicle," a spokesperson for the department tells PEOPLE.
"This incident also serves as an important reminder that firearm safety is of the utmost importance when handling, possessing, transporting, or maintaining any type of firearm."

The incident remains under investigation.
Back in 2025, a man was also shot by his dog at home in Pennsylvania.
The 53-year-old was cleaning his shotgun, when he put it down on his bed.
He alleged one of his dogs then jumped up and accidentally fired the weapon, according to WFMZ.
"While they were responding, they were informed that a dog had jumped up onto the bed, causing the shotgun to go off, which ultimately struck the male," Cpl. Michael Schoone of Shillington Police Department said.
Fortunately the man was home with his son, who called for help.
He was taken to hospital and underwent surgery, and survived the incident.
