According to an expert, a simple gadget can combat mould in your home this winter - and it only costs 1p per hour to run.

A recent poll revealed that 51% of homes in the UK suffer from the deadly condition with 43% of Brits facing the problem twice a year. According to findings, bathrooms are the most at risk, closely followed by window sills, window ledges, and ceilings.

“Mould is something that many homes suffer with due to its persistent nature and it can be difficult to get rid of,” DIY expert Jimmy Englezos says. “It tends to grow in more humid environments, which is why it can worsen in the winter months. It takes just 24 to 48 hours for mould spores to develop and if the humidity rises above 60 to 65%, you can see signs within 24 hours.”

To prevent the problem, Englezos recommends investing in a dehumidifier. “This is a good option if windows are limited in the home as it removes moisture from the air and releases dry air back into the room,” he explains. “This process reduces humidity levels and prevents condensation from forming.”

How can mould affect your health?

According to Gov.uk, damp and mould can negatively impact your health in lots of different ways. It will primarily affect your lungs and airways, but can also cause eye and skin conditions if left untreated.

“Damp and mould within the home can produce allergens, irritants, mould spores and other toxins that are harmful to health,” the website reads. “Even if visible mould is not present, dampness alone can increase the risk of health problems. Excessive moisture can promote the growth of microorganisms such as mould and other fungi, certain species of house dust mites, bacteria or viruses.”

Where to buy a dehumidifier on sale this winter

With thousands of rave reviews, the bestselling Yonlich Dehumidifier is designed to tackle mould, damp, and water damage and will only cost 1p to run per hour. The 40W power device runs at 0.04KW per hour which means it will cost on average 1p to run per hour. This handy energy calculator can help you to work out average costs in your home.

With a 2.2 litre tank, it can allegedly reduce humidity to below 45%, removing up to 650ml of moisture from the air every day - performing best when doors and windows are closed. When the tank is full, it will automatically turn off and omit a red light to alert you.

You shouldn't even notice it too much either, as the dehumidifier operates quietly in sleep mode with seven soothing colours to choose from so it can double as a light if you like.

Customers have been raving about the product in the reviews section with many saying it has helped to reduce damp and mould in the home.

“I'm a great fan of dehumidifiers and this one's no exception,” one customer wrote. “It quietly purs away in the corner of my room, keeping humidity levels down which stops the mould. Plug in and forget it as it cuts out when the tank is full.”

Another shopper was just as impressed, as they said: “It really helped because my room got damp very quickly and this absorbed so much water, it’s really a miracle that these types of things exist at such a cheap price. It doesn’t leak and it’s good value for money.”

The dehumidifier is currently on offer as part of Amazon’s massive Black Friday sale. Reduced from £65.99 to £62.99, it'll sell fast in the countdown to winter, so make sure to hurry if you're keen.
