A baby girl who was hit by a car died of ‘severe brain injuries’, an inquest hearing has heard.

Eight-month-old Mabli Cariad Hall was strapped into a pushchair when she was struck by a white BMW outside Withybush Hospital in Pembrokeshire on 21 June.

The little girl was with her dad Rob at the time, with the car also hitting another pedestrian.

Left unconscious by the crash, Mabli sustained a severe head injury and the hospital staff provided her with immediate treatment.

She was later airlifted to Cardiff University Hospital and eventually taken to Bristol Children’s Hospital.

However, Mabli sadly died four days after the crash.

The family had opened a fundraising page at the time, helping to cover the cost of Rob and the baby’s mother Gwen (who was on maternity leave) to stay in accommodation near the hospital.

Following Mabli’s death, they expressed their ‘deepest gratitude’ to the healthcare professionals involved in their daughter’s care.

An update on the page read: “Their tireless efforts and unwavering commitment have meant the world to the family during these trying times.

"Additionally, the family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the compassionate chaplains of Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, whose guidance and support have brought solace and comfort."

Today’s (11 July) inquest heard of the ‘difficult and tragic’ time for Mabli’s family.

Coroner's officer PC Carrie Sheridan said at the inquest: "At 11.50am on Wednesday, June 21 2023, police received an emergency telephone call reporting a collision involving a car and pedestrians having occurred on an unclassified road in front of the main entrance to Withybush Hospital in Pembrokeshire.

Mabli was outside Withybush Hospital with her dad Rob.

"Mabli Cariad Hall, date of birth September 27 2022 and from Neath, West Glamorgan, was one of the pedestrians involved.

"Mabli had been in her pram at the time of the collision. She was taken to the Withybush emergency department before being transferred to Cardiff hospital and later transferred to Bristol Children's Hospital.

"Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, life was sadly pronounced extinct by Dr Jerome at 1.25am on Sunday June 25 2023.

"The cause of death provided is that of severe traumatic brain injury. Police have launched a full investigation and inquiries are ongoing."

Until there is an outcome of the police investigation, the acting senior coroner for Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire, Paul Bennett, has adjourned the inquest until 25 January, 2024.

Dyfed-Powys Police had previously said the person driving the BMW suffered non-life-threatening injuries and both a passenger who was in the car as well as the other pedestrian involved, were discharged from hospital.
