Erik Menendez’s painting has brought fans to a heartbreaking realisation after it dawned on them what it could mean.

After droves of fans have been looking into the Menendez brothers’ case, Redditors made a heart felt discovery about the youngest brother.

Erik and his brother Lyle Menendez were convicted of murdering their parents in 1989 at the family’s Beverly Hills home, and sentenced to life in prison without parole in 1996 during their second trial.

But it was at the first trial in 93 when Erik struck up an unlikely friendship.

A friendship with a woman named Betty.

Betty Oldfield’s friendship began with Erik when she was an alternate juror in his first trial, which ended with a hung jury.

His attorney, Leslie Abramson, invited sympathetic jurors to a dinner, and this is when Betty decided to make a connection with the man she wanted to see free.

Since then, the nearly 80-year-old has been the best of friends with the Menendez brother, and has visited him on multiple occasions.

When she spoke to NBC, she said: "Erik and I have adopted one another. He has a new mother, and I have a new son."

Oldfield said Erik has since spent his time behind bars putting his energy into positive things, such as art.

She said: "He is so busy. He is taking college courses. He has championed causes for elderly and ADA inmates."

As it turns out, he also spends his time creating beautiful paintings.

One of those paintings is something he gifted to Oldfield, and Redditors can’t stop talking about the meaning behind it.

The painting depicts a small home in the middle of a dim, rural landscape with a stream and trees around it.

He also sent a painting to Kathy Griffin!

The artwork is fantastic, but one fan believes that this was all down to his self-taught skills.

Explaining to other users, the person wrote: “Dude, I was so impressed with this. Beautiful.

“Looking at Erik’s drawings when he was younger and how poor they were compared to that painting, it’s incredible how he taught himself art and found that outlet to use while in prison.

“Just seeing Erik’s newfound passion for drawing and Lyle getting his bachelor’s degree. After everything they’ve been through they still have hope and still work on becoming better and doing things that make them happy.

“So full of life even now. It makes me appreciate their journeys and support them that much more. They have proven themselves more than enough in my eyes. Been locked up for far too long.”

Another shared how the painting is ‘beautiful and sad at the same time’ while another speculated what things could have been like if he’d had ‘loving, supportive parents that nurtured his aspirations at an early age’.

Someone else sadly commented: “Beautiful painting, but so eerie to think of him painting these serene scenes of peace out in the world while he is locked in prison still. i feel horrible that they have never experienced true peace like this painting portrays.”
