It's not every day that someone arrives to a hospital with a historical artefact stuck up their rear-end.

So, you can understand why medical staff would have been caught slightly off-guard after a 24-year-old bloke came in with a WWI bomb inside his anus.

The individual went to a Rangueil Hospital in Toulouse and complained about severe pain in his backside on Saturday night (31 January).

He admitted to inserting an object inside himself, but didn't go into specifics about what kind of object they were dealing with.

It was only after undergoing surgery that staff found a 16x4cm WWI shell dating back over 100 years to 1918 inside him, La Dépêche reports.

Seven firefighters, police and a bomb disposal team were called at approximately 3am local time and a security perimeter was set up, France Bleu reports.

"As a precautionary measure, firefighters are mobilised to reinforce in order to prevent any risk of fire during the intervention," La Dépêche reported.

Firefighters later confirmed to Le Parisien that they defused the bomb shell and assured there was no further risk of danger.

While it's not entirely clear how the shell became lodged in the unnamed man's bottom, he is reportedly still recovering from surgery and he is expected to be questioned by authorities in an attempt to establish what occurred.

He could also face charges for violating France’s weapons legislation.

While it may sound a tad out of the ordinary, thousands of people do find themselves in the hospital after getting some kind of object stuck up their backside.

From 2012 to 2021, about 38,948 people were hospitalised with foreign objects in their rectum each year, according to the American Journal of Emergency Medicine. As per the journal, the average patient age was 43, and 78 percent were male, if you were curious.

Now, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission actually keeps a database of Emergency Room (ER) visits and what’s bringing people in.

And, if you're curious, Defector has actually gone through the most recent data from 2024 to reveal some of the most puzzling items that were reported to be stuck inside American, um, cavities.

Just some notable mentions include uncooked pasta, baseballs, and vape pens.

Priceless quotes from hospitals include a patient who 'reports he slipped in the shower and a shampoo bottle went up his rectum', and another who inserted a 'plastic coathanger' up his bottom and 'cut off the outside of the hanger so he could drive to the ER'.
