Woman created female-only club to stop men ruining nights out

Woman created female-only club to stop men ruining nights out

LICK is based in London.

A woman has revealed how she created a female-only club to stop men ruining nights out.

Teddy Edwardes, who also goes by @TeddyEdwardes on TikTok, first created the club night, called LICK, in London.

Over on the video sharing platform, Teddy posted about why she decided to create the club after a number of negative experiences in other venues. You can watch the video below:

According to a 2017 survey, 63 per cent of women aged 18-24 have experienced harassment on a night out, while almost 80 per cent say they expect it to happen to either themselves or a female friend.

"6 years ago a man ruined my night out for the very last time," Teddy wrote in the clip.

"And I created a women only night club. It's now the biggest in the country with 2000 women a night."

Teddy then further explained how she started the club after becoming fed up of having issues with men.

"I started LICK because I just had enough of going to straight clubs and every single time having some sort of issue with men," she told BuzzFeed.

"The final straw that broke the camel's back was: I walked into my friend's album label launch in Shoreditch and within seconds, a man grabbed my ponytail and pulled me backwards across the club all the way to the bar because he 'wanted to buy me a drink'."

The club has been a huge success, with Teddy explaining that since its launch, they often receive positive messages from those who have attended events, explaining how LICK has been life changing for them 'either via feeling safe, representation, finding partners, new friends'.

And Teddy has worked hard to build the club into the successful venture it is now. "For the first three years, I barely made a penny. I did it out of pure passion. My partner at the time told me I’d never make any money from it and I should get a normal job in a café," she added.

But once things picked up, Teddy said that 'it was the BEST night of our lives every single Tuesday'.

And people on TikTok have been loving the idea, with many praising Teddy for creating the club night.

One person wrote: "I can just imagine the bathroom chats... LOVE."

While another said: "As a mother of three girls one who will be 18 in a couple of years I back this 100%%."

And a third added: "Honestly your clubs look amazing. My night out got ruined a few weeks ago by two men so maybe one day I’ll come to your club haha."
