If you thought sex during your period was a no-go, it might be time to think again.

Contrary to societal expectations and outdated myths, your sex life doesn't actually have to be put on hold during your time of the month.

And while having sex on your period can be a tricky situation to practically navigate, sometimes it happens to be when we're most up for it.

Not only this, but doctors have suggested that there may also be a lot of benefits.

Despite feeling like you want a piece of action, it can be a difficult conversation to approach with your partner, especially if period sex is new territory.

Whether you fancy including it in your sex life or not, it's good to know the pros and cons before venturing into this new realm.

What are the benefits of having sex on your period?

We'll start with all the good things.

Relief from cramps

Dr. Renita White, an obstetrician and gynecologist from Georgia Obstetrics and Gynecology, US, has noted that orgasms can actually be great pain relievers.

Talking to period tracking app Flo, she said: "The endorphins released during sex and orgasm may help improve menstrual cramp discomfort."

Extra lubrication

It's one thing you can never have too much of.

Dr. White suggests that sex may become more enjoyable on your period for this reason.

She added: "The menstrual blood can serve as natural lubrication during intercourse."

Increased sex drive

As noted previously, sometimes your period is when we're most up for bedroom antics.

And it's good to make the most of this.

The expert said: "Some people have a higher libido during menstruation, so they may enjoy having more sex, but it all depends on the person.

"Plus, there is more blood flow to the uterus, pelvic floor, and vagina.

"This can increase sensitivity during sex."

What are the side effects of having sex on your period?

Time for the less-exciting stuff.

While it's totally safe to have sex on your period, there are a few things that make the situation require a little more planning.

Mess

As you can imagine or perhaps relate to, period sex doesn't come without a reminder that you're on your period.

It's the gift that keeps on giving, especially if you plan your action in the early days of your cycle.

However, with a towel and new bedsheets to hand - and maybe a shower if things got particularly messy - you'll be good to go.

STIs

STIs can still be transmitted while you're on your period.

Dr. White warned: "However, some viruses (like hepatitis) can live in blood.

"So there is a higher risk of transmission during your period."

She recommends both you and your partner getting screened for STIs before doing the deed and always wearing barrier protection such as a condom.

Pregnancy

It's a common misconception that you can't get pregnant on your period.

And while the chances are slim, it's definitely not 100 percent.

The doctor warned that birth control should still to be used, despite the lower risk.
