An expert has revealed when the ‘perfect’ time in your life to get married is, after sharing that ‘divorce day’ is just around the corner.

Debating when the best time to get married and settle down has been an age-old conversation.

Some argue your twenties are the perfect time, others say to wait until your thirties when you really have everything figured out.

And whilst it’s impossible to predict or plan exactly when the big moment is going to happen, one expert has revealed when, statistically, the ‘perfect’ time to get married is.

Law firm, Irwin Mitchell, have worked out exactly when the right time is based on divorce figures, claiming that the most common day married couples decide to split is actually just around the corner, on the first working Monday after Christmas.

They shared that amongst heterosexual couples who are divorced, the most common marriage length was eight years.

This is a two-year increase from the figures that were released prior to 2021, which could be because people chose to delay their divorces until after lockdown during the pandemic.

Based on these stats, couples planning to get married in 2023 could be divorced in 2031 if it doesn’t work out.

Family law senior associate at Irwin Mitchell, Jennifer Pollock said: “It’s a sad fact that around 50% of marriages end in divorce, but there are now many more options available to couples to separate in the best way for them.

“Some divorces will be amicable, some may need mediation to help make agreements, while others may end up in court.

The company revealed that the best age to get married is between 28 and 32.

Based on data, they found that marriages in this age bracket usually have the highest chance of success and they typically tend to have the fewest divorces.

‘No fault divorce’ was introduced in 2022, meaning that neither party has to put forward evidence of wrongdoing in court in order to obtain a divorce.

Jennifer added: “This makes the divorce process less contentious and recognises the importance of an individual’s autonomy to make these difficult decisions without having to prove why they are entitled to a divorce.”

However, other experts argue that a ‘perfect’ time in your life to get married is more feasible than a ‘perfect’ age, as people meet their life partners at all different ages!
