Shocking moment man rejects his girlfriend's proposal live on air leaving radio hosts stunned

Talk about a leap year proposal gone wrong...

Yesterday was the leap year and, in case you didn't know, there's a bit of a historic tradition that sees women pop the question to their partners on the special day.

While it's the 21st century now and a woman can ask their significant other for their hand in marriage any day of the year, the 29 February has become a fun little novelty for many couples to hop on board the age-old tradition.

And that was exactly the case for one woman who decided to propose to her boyfriend live on air, however, in a shocking turn of events, he rejected her proposal leaving radio hosts well and truly stunned. Have a look:

Also known as Bachelors’ Day, the act of women proposing on the leap year is allegedly a super old Irish tradition - that dates all the way back to the 5th century!

Legend has it that the tradition stems from St Brigid of Kildare complaining to St Patrick that maidens had to wait too long for their love interests to ask for their hand.

This resulted in St Patrick’s decreeing that on the extra day of a leap year, women would be allowed to propose to men.

And, speaking on 101.9 The Fox’s Fifi, Fev and Nick, a woman called Carly decided to partake in the tradition by asking Brad, her partner of five years, to marry her.

One woman decided to pop the question to her partner live on-air.

"It’s been the most incredible five years of my life with you," she him over the phone.

"Every morning, I wake up as the luckiest girl alive. You make me feel like nothing else I’ve ever felt before."

Carly continued to gush: "You are my north, my south, my east, my west, my working week and my Sunday rest.

"I have loved growing with you and learning about you. I love the person you are, and the person I am is totally because of you. I can’t wait to do this forever… will you marry me?"

This is when things took a turn.

Brad, clearly baffled by Carly's grand gesture, responded: "You’re joking … is this live on-air?

The hosts said the awkward moment was the 'most uncomfortable' they'd ever felt on radio.

"You’re joking. Obviously … like … um … [pauses]. I dunno, like … I’m not trying to put you on the spot, but I’m just pretty… I don’t know if this is the sort of thing you do on-air. It’s a big deal and I’m a pretty traditional kind of guy as you know."

Yikes.

Brad went on to explain: "I don’t want to seem like I’m not grateful or anything … you know I love you, babe.

"I dunno, I’m feeling pretty shocked right now."

And, just like that, the extremely awkward phone call came to an end.

"That could be the most uncomfortable I’ve ever felt on radio," one of the radio hosts said as the segment finished up.

You can say that again.

And the best part? The boyfriend in question actually already had a ring and ended up proposing to his girlfriend that very night...
