We've always dreamed of having a swimming pool in our back yard, but one clever couple has gone one step further and built their own NATURAL pool which comes surrounded by 1,500 plants.

Caroline and Jon Edwards' pool, which measures 14 metres by 9 metres and is 2.4 metres deep, doesn't need any chemicals or chlorine and is kept clean by the rainwater in the plants around it. Oh, and it comes complete with a sauna and decking too - how lush!

While its construction wasn't cheap - the pool set Caroline, 56, and Jon, 55, back £18,000 - we definitely think it's worth it for the environmental factor alone!

Mum Caroline, a singing director, said: "Jon hired a digger and started digging the lawn which is when I realised there was no going back - it took forever. I was sceptical at first but we managed to pull it off - it's absolutely gorgeous. We're in there most days and we have become the party house as everyone wants to use the pool.

It even comes with a terrace for the dog (

"We had to divert rainwater from the gutters and roof into the pool in order to fill it up and that took a long time but we have no maintenance costs on it now. The plants keep it completely clean and it continues to be beautiful all year long as you don't need to cover it up during winter; it attracts a lot of wildlife to our garden.

"The most expensive part was buying all the plants as you have to make sure you have the right ones which are going to keep the pool naturally clean - we do water tests on it to make sure it's safe to swim in.

"It was nice to do something together - we definitely encountered some problems on the way but the outcome is better than I could have ever imagined and our family and friends absolutely love coming round to use it".

Jon has always loved taking on huge DIY projects, with Caroline adding: "When Jon first mentioned it to me, I just thought it was another one of his crazy projects that would never get completed. We have four kids between us and they've all left home for university and work so we thought it would be the perfect time to start something new.

If you head over to Instagram, you can follow Jon and Caroline's journey to completing their oasis, which even includes an outdoor kitchen and a super cute dog. Jel!

That's our inspiration for next summer, then.
