A psychic has shared the top five signs to look out for if you think a deceased loved one is trying to communicate with you.

As most of us will know, grief can be incredibly difficult, so knowing that the person you're missing is trying to reach out to you can bring a helpful sense of peace and comfort.

Whether you're a believer in this kind of thing or not, it's impossible to deny that many people have experienced signs like this, it all depends on whether you want to open yourself up to it.

The signs are also way more subtle than you would expect - don't be under the wrong impression, there's not going to be an actual ghost that comes to physically speak to you.

Instead, it's the little things like dreams and smells that could mean a loved one is nearby, but to recognise them you need to know what they are.

According to Top10.com, there are a number of signs to look out for...

Sensing their presence

Now, while this first sign might seem hard to pinpoint, it's something I'm sure you will notice if it happens to you.

Most physic and spiritual websites list this as their number one thing to look out for, and it's way more common than you'd think.

A 2021 study revealed that 44 percent of adults in the United States say they have felt the presence of a loved one who died.

But what does this actually mean? Sensing the presence of someone you've lost?

You may simply notice the energy around you change, sense someone is sitting close to you when no-one is there, or feel the touch of a hand on yours.

According to Earthmonk, many people describe it as the 'energy in the room shifting when a loved one draws close - a spaciousness, a lightness, a sense of calm' and they just know they are not alone.

Basically, trust your gut and if you sense it, you're probably not going to be wrong.

Losing or misplacing things

Do your belongings keep going missing? The house keys aren't in their usual spot or your favourite necklace has disappeared from your jewellery box?

It could be another subtle sign that a loved one is trying to make their presence known.

This is a way that the person in question could be trying to let you know they're around or it could even mean they have a specific message for you, depending on what the object is.

As per Centre of Excellence: "These signs from the deceased may be subtle, but they are often connected to meaningful memories or moments. Pay attention to objects that seem out of place or appear at times when you need comfort most."

Smelling their scent

When someone dies, it's common for those closest to them to hold on to their perfume or aftershave to smell when they're missing them.

Scent and memories are closely linked and smelling something familiar can instantly trigger an emotional response and remind you of a specific moment or time.

But, when the scent appears out of nowhere, this is the third sign that your loved one could be trying to contact you from beyond the grave.

The most common scents include cigarette or tobacco smoke, perfumes, the smell of a particular flower, or the smell of a food they love.

Dreaming about them

One of the most common signs actually takes place when you're sleeping rather than awake, you just might not realise it means anything.

In grief, it's not unusual to dream about loved ones who have passed away because your mind is still processing your thoughts and feelings about them.

However, there are specific instances where people believe it could actually be a visitation or a message from them.

Beliefnet explains: "What sets these dreams apart is the fact that they don’t feel like any dream that you’ve had before.

"The deceased loved one may show up in the dream out of nowhere, often surrounded by light.

"They may say something directly to you, but often in these dream sequences, you feel a sense of calm or peace, signalling that they are OK."

Seeing orbs or flashes of light

Finally, constantly seeing orbs of flashes of light can be a tell-tale sign that someone is trying to communicate with you from beyond the grave, according to EarthMonk.

If you don't know what these are - they're the blurry circles of light that sometimes appear in the background of photographs.

As well as in pictures, you may also catch them briefly out of the corner of your eye.

Orbs are thought to be transparent balls of light energy that are connected to spirits, while others simply put them down to being dust or water droplets.

It all depends on how much you believe!

If you have experienced a bereavement and would like to speak with someone in confidence, contact Cruse Bereavement Care via their national helpline on 0808 808 1677.
