People urged to check their purse as rare 2p coin could actually be worth up to £1,000

Well that's Christmas presents sorted...

It's nothing new that many of us are worried about the cost of living crisis especially as we brace ourselves for heating costs amid the chillier months as well as the chaos of Christmas present shopping.

So - it makes perfect sense why we're all desperate to scrimp and save our pennies to cut back on costs as we near the end of the year.

However, you'll be intrigued to know that people are now being urged to check their purse as a rare 2p coin could actually be worth up to £1,000. Check it out:

We all know cash is somewhat a thing of the past now - what with contactless spending and Apple pay - but I'm sure we've probably all got a few coppers in the bottom of our bags, jeans pockets and under the sofa laying about.

Luckily, one coin collector aficionado has taken to TikTok to share which coppers are simply worth a few pennies and which ones could earn you a small fortune.

The TikToker, who goes by the handle @thecoincollectoruk online, took to the platform to share with their 51.1k followers exactly what to look out for.

The narration began: "Check your 2p coin as it could be worth £800 to £1,000 plus."

According to the TikToker, there are 'three different 2p coins in circulation currently'.

These include the 'regular Welsh Feathers' 2p, the 'Royal Shield of Arms' 2p and, the one you want to be looking out for, the 'New Pence' 2p.

"Between 1971 and 198, all 2p coins had the words 'New Pence' to celebrate the coin entering circulation however, in 1983, the Royal Mint accidentally minted 'New Pence' 2p coins in extremely limited numbers," they continued.

Such coins are 'very rare' and reportedly 'go for around £1,000'.

According to the TikToker, the minting error was also the case with the one penny coins as well during those years.

"However, the mistake was only made on the 2p in 1983 and all of the 1p coins were highly minted," the video concluded.

They captioned the short clip, which has since clocked up more than 1.4 million views, writing: "Do you have any of these 2p coins?"

Well, I'm sure we'll all be on the hunt for them now.
