A doctor has revealed the reason why women need 'dramatically' more 'uninterrupted' sleep than men.

There's a general study that floats about claiming that humans need around six-eight hours sleep per night to function.

That's what we were told in school, and it's what our parents were taught.

But due to women being absent from most clinical trials prior to the 1990s, has anyone stopped to think that women might actually require more sleep than men?

Well it seems as though that's true, according to new research, which suggests that women need far more sleep than men - and the quality of it is equally as important as the length.

Dr. Patrick Flynn posted a video to his Instagram, explaining exactly why it's important that women get more sleep than the standard six-eight hours.

"Women need dramatically more sleep than men," the expert said.

"And I can always say this, a man can get away with seven or eight hours, sometimes even six, though I don't encourage it.

"But the idea is that a woman needs eight to ten hours.

"And the key is what is called hormonal reserves."

He explained: "Women depend so much on their adrenals, to produce even daily hormones.

The doctor explained that a man relies heavily on their testicles for this use.

He added: "Testicles work if you're sleeping or not, you know what I'm saying?"

Dr Flynn also noted the important of 'uninterrupted' sleep for women, which to all the news mums out there, feels slightly ironic.

He ended his video by stressing just how important it was for women to get this much sleep.

However, people in the comments of the video, people felt his recommendations were almost impossible.

One woman said: "Which woman get this amount of sleep? Ever? Amazing how we even exist."

Another added: "I always sleep more than my husband for us to function at the same level."

A third said: "This is so validating.

"Everyone thinks I’m insane for only feeling well rested after sleeping 10 hours a night.

"It’s super inconvenient needing that much sleep in this man made world, but I do!!"

Next time your significant others claims to be tired, having this piece of information locked away might get you a few extra hours kip!
