Truth behind New Year’s Eve ‘grape theory’ trend taking over Gen Z

Doing this on New Year's Eve could lead to romance in 2025

A viral trend which consists of eating grapes on New Year's Eve could bring you a year full of romance.

When it comes to bizarre things going viral, this definitely has to be up there.

But, if you're looking for love in 2025, there's actually no harm in giving it a go - proving you don't choke on the grapes.

The trend consists of consuming 12 grapes when the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve, but there's a small catch.

You have to be sitting under a table.

Which if you're out out, could be a slight issue - as well as sourcing the grapes.

Aside from these minor considerations, women all across the world are saying that the trend has worked wonders for them, and are going into a new year with their loved one, 12 months after scoffing the grapes.

The tradition of eating 12 grapes at midnight is originally from Spain, where it’s known as 'las doce uvas de la suerte' or 'the 12 grapes of luck'.

Each grape represents one month of the year, and eating all 12 within the first 12 seconds of the New year is said to bring good fortune for each month ahead.

But thanks to Gen Z's takeover of the trend, it's now used to help singles meet their match.

Several girls have taken to social media to share their success stories from the year prior.

One posted to Instagram, and said: "How did I meet my boyfriend? I sat under a table on NYE and ate 12 grapes at midnight."

A second posted a picture of her significant other, captioned: "One of the best things of the year. #12 grapes."

Another said: "I did it last year, and by February, I was in the happiest relationship of my life!"

While for most it's just a bit of fun to perhaps to with they're friends, others really owe their relationships to the trend.

So, if you're tired of dating apps, and you feel like a bit of manifestation could be a helping hand...why not!

You may also just a bit curious about whether it might work, so it may be worth looking slightly strange for 12 seconds.

That's if you like the sound of consuming warm grapes that have been in your handbag all night.
