Warning: This article contains spoilers for Toy Story 5
It’s been almost a whole week since Toy Story 5 hit cinemas around the world - and fans are still spotting Easter eggs, coming up with theories, and dissecting their favourite moments.
The fifth instalment of the popular Disney Pixar franchise focuses on cowgirl Jessie, who is voiced by Joan Cusack, as she battles with Bonnie’s new tech-toy Lilypad, and in the process, visits the home of her former owner, Emily.
The animated movie also follows Jessie’s romance with Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), with the two toys eventually sharing a smooch and ‘getting married'.
As Buzz was trying to confess his feelings for Jessie, she interrupted him with a kiss.
But, Allen, 73, who has voiced the character for the entire franchise, admitted that he actually found the storyline, and that particular scene, a little bit ‘creepy’ to begin with.
The actor explained that he channels his inner child when stepping into the role of Buzz, so a romantic scene felt bizarre.
Tim Allen wasn't the biggest fan of Buzz's Toy Story 5 storyline to begin with (Emma McIntyre/Getty Images) He told US Weekly: “[It was] creepy! When I’m doing [Toy Story], I’m literally an 8-year-old kid. That’s what the personality I feel is inside Buzz, is my 11-year-old. So it’s like, ‘Oh God, oh no, I’m doing that?!’”
The outlet reports that, according to Allen, it hilariously evoked the same feeling as watching a romance scene in the same room as his daughters.
The star explained: “That’s all they talk about at school. Every time there’s a kissing scene, everybody gets really quiet in the room. Especially when [Elizabeth was] a little younger.
“And that is exactly how I responded [to Buzz kissing Jessie]. I remember when I first read it, I said, ‘Are you going to show this?’”
He added, “It’s like Woody’s bald spot. You kind of move them out of the animated thing, and it gets into some larger dramatic questions. Can they get married? And let’s move on from there.”
However, Allen did enjoy that the scene got everyone talking, as he joked: “I loved [it] because it affects everybody in the room. You know, adults, and then kids go, ‘Eew!’ You got that potpourri of responses.”
Either way, it’s safe to say that the storyline and movie as a whole has been resonating well with audiences, who have taken to social media to praise it.
Jessie and Buzz shared a kiss in the highly-anticipated children's movie (Disney Pixar) One X user wrote: “Just finished watching #ToyStory5 and I can’t stop sobbing. It was beyond amazing. My favorite franchise of all time. I love everything about it.”
While a second agreed: “Didn't think a Toy Story movie could still affect me like this...watching Woody, Buzz, Jessie again brought back so many memories...for a moment, it genuinely felt like nothing had changed and I was a kid all over again #toystory5.”
And a third wrote: “Having Jessie be the main character was such a good idea! Her backstory was always fascinating, film has an excellent pay off for her character. Having toys vs tech be the story of the film is genius. Fun caring story kids will definitely enjoy! 10/10 #ToyStory5.”
