Fans divided by 'infuriating' ending to 'gripping' BBC iPlayer crime drama

The six-part series has left viewers tearing their hair out

If you're on the hunt for a brand new boxset to binge your way through this weekend, look no further.

That's because there's a chilling new British crime-drama which is said to be giving the likes of Broadchurch, Line of Duty and Happy Valley a run for their money, with an ending that has left viewers tearing their hair out (in a good way!).

And to make things easier, you don't have to dive deep into the internet or scour through catch-up TV to find it as it's added to BBC iPlayer this week, following its original success in New Zealand and Ireland last year.

Starring the likes of Richard Flood, Rachel Morgan, Michelle Fairley (a.k.a Catlin Stark from Game of Thrones!) and Simon Mead, The Gone follows the mystery of an Irish couple who go missing in New Zealand.

An Irish detective teams up with authorities in New Zealand to try and solve the case, finding that 'no one is gone without a trace' in this small town with a 'dark history'.

"Has trouble found them, or did they go looking for it?" a synopsis asks.

Since landing on the streaming service earlier this week, the haunting premise has sent viewers wild, with plot twists and dark turns emerging around every corner.

It isn't just the spine-tingling storyline, big-name cast, stellar acting or sublime cinematography that has telly-lovers talking.

No, apparently, it is the unforeseen cliffhanger ending that has totally divided viewers.

Many people have binged the whole series in one.

"I binged this on @BBCiPlayer WHAT A CLIFFHANGER on the last ep!!!!! I’d def stick with it if I were you! #TheGone," one penned on social media this week.

Another wrote: "Just binged #TheGone on @BBCiPlayer great Irish/New Zealand cast, gripping story, but, OMG swear at the TV ending!!”

"Oh mannnn, that ending!?! The Gone is an excellent new crime drama with such a relatable cast, definitely one to watch on BBC4," a third went on.

Another penned on Twitter: "Holy shit The Gone was amazing. I did not guess the killer AT ALL and that literally never happens. Also that ending??? F*****g brilliant.

"The drawing together of Maori and Irish stories was really something. Do yourself a favour and watch it asap. #TheGone #NewZealand".

A fifth continued: "wow, bloody loved it, never guessed in a million yrs, really good, can't wait for season 2 BRAVO 💖 #thegone".

Well, we know what we'll be sticking on the telly tonight.
