People are only just realising the meaning of a joke from the 2002 live-action Scooby Doo movie and it's got them in stitches.

2002 was a great time for fun, lighthearted movies that we didn't know would stay with us forever and become cult classics. Films like Crossroads starring Britney Spears, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks' Catch Me If You Can and Bend It Like Beckham with Keira Knightley.

Another film that definitely deserves to make the list is the live-action version of Scooby-Doo - the first one, let's not talk about the second one Monster's Unleashed.

Bringing us iconic scenes like that body-swapping one, Scooby dressed as an old lady and then punching Fred in the face and of course, taking down the naughty pup that is Scrappy, there's so much to love about the iconic animation on the big-screen.

Like with most films we watch as kids though, there's a couple of jokes thrown in for the adults.

And now that those of us who watched this film when it came out are now adults ourselves, jokes that once went over our heads are now more relatable.

HIDDEN NSFW JOKE IN TOY STORY THAT MOST ADULTS WON'T NOTICE IS THERE

X-RATED REASON WHY MOANA HAS A DIFFERENT NAME IN PARTS OF EUROPE

Cast your minds back to the plane scene when Scooby and the gang - Fred, Daphne, Velma and Shaggy - are on their way to Spooky Island to help solve the strange goings on having been summoned by the island's owner Mondavarious (Rowan Atkinson).

Shaggy (Scream's Matthew Lillard) ends up sat next to a beautiful girl (played by Wedding Crashers' Isla Fisher) who he instantly hits it off with.

As she introduces herself, she says: "I'm Mary Jane," to which Shaggy replies, "Like, that's my favourite name."

Now, as a kid, this was not something that would stop us in our tracks and have us in fits of laughter. As an adult, however, it's quite the different story.

See, Shaggy and Scooby are known are for eating a lot - especially Scooby Snacks - but the truth seems a lot less innocent when considering the fan theory that Shaggy and Scooby are stoners.

As we now know as adults, 'Mary Jane' is actually a nickname for weed... see, makes a lot more sense now doesn't it. Of course, that would be Shaggy's favourite name - it's a match made in heaven.

People on social media couldn't believe it had taken them this long to get the reference. Posted on the Instagram account @todaysyearsold, one user said: "I was today years old when I understood this joke."

Another person pointed out that this isn't the only reference to Shaggy and Scooby's 'lifestyle' that people didn't catch on to: "Don't forget when they say 'Shaggy and Scooby are probably off somewhere getting...' and then it cuts to the mystery fan flooded with smoke and Shaggy saying '...totally baked. These muffins are perfect."

How did we miss that one as well?!

Sadly, the joke didn't land well with everyone as another Instagram user resolved: "I still don't get it."

Maybe they just baked some muffins too, eh?

As for whether Shaggy and Scooby are actually stoners, Shaggy's voice actor, Scott Innes, disagrees with that idea, telling streamer VyseDomo in 2022 (via Dextero): "Everybody says that, but you know, a Scooby Snack is not pot, so no he’s not. A lot of people think that because they want to."
