Channel 4 viewers left divided after watching ‘harrowing’ new mystery drama

Viewers are pretty pressed over one particular character but not everyone had the same issue

We've been absolutely treated with a whole bunch of cracking telly as of recent.

From the eagerly-anticipated third season of Bridgerton to the extremely controversial Netflix flick which shows a man's fully erect penis - it's clear we've been far from short of viewing material options to cosy up to.

However, it seems that not everything coming out on the streaming platforms are as loved as other options as Channel 4 viewers have threatened to 'switch off' after watching what they've dubbed an 'absolutely vile' new six-part mystery drama.

Now, the first episode hit our screens just this week on Monday (13 May) and starts with a violent attack on a teenager at an illegal beach rave.

The attack ends up sending 'shockwaves of suspicion' through a Merseyside community.

The whodunnit - or, in this case, a-why-done-it - series focusing on a group of 'disparate teenagers' and their parents with each character having a motive for attacking the teen, named Kelly.

It stars the likes of Boiling Point's Vinette Robinson who plays Natalie, Saltburn's Sadie Soverall who plays Natalie's daughter, Jessica, as well as Shameless' Warren Brown.

If you hadn't guessed it already, the series is none other than The Gathering.

Check out the official trailer here:

Now, Natalie has been dubbed the 'mother from hell' by viewers for how she treated her daughter who is also a talented teen gymnast.

In the TV programme, Jessica tries to meet her mum's unattainable standards and deals with the fallout after not being picked for a gymnastics team.

Natalie then threatens to move Jessica away from all her mates and family in Liverpool to Manchester as a result - something fans were well and truly stunned by.

"She's absolutely vile! So pushy! Like Liverpool's version of Ruby from #Emmerdale! #TheGathering," hit out one X, formerly Twitter user.

A second slammed: "It's pretty dire so far. I doubt that I'll bother watching the next episode #TheGathering."

"I cannot stand pushy parents," penned a third, while a fourth piped up: "This is horrible. Turning her daughter into a show pony."

A fifth added: "Vile woman. I think that it's definitely abuse. Pushy parents are a nightmare."

Not everyone felt the same, however, with one viewer saying: "I've been enjoying the new drama," whilst another added: "Another incredible show set and filmed in Liverpool."

Others called it 'compelling' as they rushed to 'binge watch' the entire thing.

The Gathering is currently available to stream on Channel 4.
