The Beast in Me viewers shocked after hearing Matthew Rhys’ real accent

People were shocked to learn that Matthew actually has a totally different accent

The Beast in Me viewers have been left stunned after they heard Matthew Rhys' real accent for the first time ever.

It's always pretty strange when you're used to hearing a character's voice on TV, only to realise they sound completely different when you hear the actor talking IRL.

And people were so surprised when they learned that Rhys isn't American at all, but actually Welsh.

The actor is starring alongside Claire Danes in Netflix thriller, The Beast in Me, which dropped on the streaming platform earlier this month.

The Cardiff-born actor plays property tycoon Nile Jarvis alongside Danes, who stars as author Aggie Wiggs.

Jarvis is long suspected of killing his missing wife, while Wiggs plays his neighbour who begins writing about Jarvis' story as a way of escaping her writer's rut.

Speaking about how he prepared for such a heinous role, Rhys told the Los Angeles Times: "There’s a couple of ways — a light dabble of narcissists, sociopaths, 'The Psychopath Test' by Jon Ronson.

"I read a bit about people who have killed people in crimes of passion, impulse killings, and how they tend to deem themselves the victim sometimes in those moments and, therefore, the murder was the result of their victimization, which I think did help and lend itself with Nile for me."

People were certainly impressed with Rhys' performance... especially his accent. Check out his real accent here:

Many didn't actually realise that the American accent used in the series was not his own.

One person wrote: "I cannot get over Matthew Rhys’ Welsh accent."

While another said: "I loved that series and didn’t know until recently Matthew Rhys is welsh."

And a third added: "I can’t wait for a whole new group of people to discover how Matthew Rhys actually sounds when he’s not doing an American accent."

Rhys isn't the only famous face to completely blow viewers away with their change in accent.

For example, viewers were shocked when they heard Sarah Lancashire's real accent after watching her on Happy Valley.

During an NTAs acceptance speech a few years ago, viewers were pretty flabbergasted that Lancashire's real-life accent doesn't match her character Catherine Cawood's heavy Yorkshire accent.

"Hearing Sarah Lancashire have a posh accent is so weird hahahaha," said one.

Another added: "Love the collective shock of hearing Sarah Lancashire's real accent #NTAs2023 Well done to her though, great actress."

"Shocked that Sarah Lancashire doesn’t have a northern accent in real life haha #NTAs2023," a third commented.
