Friends fans are losing their minds after realising most iconic scene from show wasn’t actually meant to happen

It's a part of TV history, and it might never have happened if it wasn't for one of the actor's slip ups

There's absolutely no denying that Friends has given us some of the most hilarious and iconic TV moments in history.

"We were on a break!" and "He's her lobster" are moments that certainly come to mind, but how would you feel if one of the most breathtaking moments in the sitcom's history almost didn't happen?

During the very last moment of the final episode of season four, all Friends fans will know the moment when Ross (David Schwimmer) mistakes his bride's name at the altar.

In the episode, Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) - who's realised she's still in love with Ross, despite all that 'we were on a break' drama - arrives in a rush at his and Emily's London nuptials and that's enough to spin Ross' head and before he knows it, he's fluffing his words.

Instead of saying "I take thee Emily," he says "I take thee Rachel," making perhaps the biggest wedding blunder to ever exist, with the moment continuing to cringe out fans to this very day.

Yet it turns out this blunder was never even meant to happen, as one person pointed out in a social media forum.

In a thread on Reddit, one fan revealed the scoop as they wrote: "When Ross says Rachel, that was almost impromptu.

"The mistake had happened earlier during a day-4 rehearsal, and the morning the cast filmed in front of the audience, they got word the script would be changing."

In response, fans have had their 'minds blown' after learning the iconic moment was a total mistake.

One person wrote: "Is this blowing anyone else's mind?!?!?!" as another shared: "Still blows my mind lol".

The slip up was also confirmed as a total accident by a member of the sitcom's writing team, as a writer previously explained in 2020.

He shared: "We never knew how it was going to end. We struggled with it, we couldn’t figure it out.

"And then there was one time, at a taping, where David Schwimmer walked in the room. What he was supposed to say was 'I have the cab waiting downstairs Emily'.

"But he walked in and said 'I have the cab waiting, Rachel'. Oh shoot, sorry, let me start again'.

"And he ran back out, and we kind of went, that’s what should happen. But it just happened ‘cos David flubbed his line."

It was also previously revealed that Helen Baxendale - the actress who played Emily - was pregnant in real life, so her time on Friends as Ross' wife was going to be short lived regardless.
