Selling Sunset fans weren’t convinced by Emma Hernan’s Olympic admission

Selling Sunset fans weren’t convinced by Emma Hernan’s Olympic admission

Apparently, Selling Sunset's Emma Hernan could have had a very different career

Everyone's favourite real estate reality show is back with a bang, with the eighth season dropping on Netflix today (6 September) and many fans have binged it already.

Back in 2019, the luxury real estate agents at the Oppenheim Group teamed up with Netflix to bring us Selling Sunset.

The employees of the high-end real estate brokerage firm are now bonafide reality stars, mixing their newfound celebrity status with the day job of selling homes to Los Angeles' elites.

Back in the fourth season of the show, Emma Hernan joined the lineup and got straight to work, selling luxurious houses for eye-watering prices.

Though of course, alongside the conversations about escrow is a healthy dose of drama between the girls.

She butted heads with Christine Quinn, before Christine eventually decided to leave the show.

Emma had claimed that Christine had attempted to bribe a client, which the latter denied.

Emma made fast friends with fellow Oppenheim Group employee Chrishell Stause, with the two now being besties.

The duo became a trio with the arrival of Chelsea Lazkani during the show's fifth season.

One particular Emma moment sticks in the heads of fans - and it's all to do with her supposed swimming skills.

In a conversation with developer Micah McDonald, Emma claimed she was such a good swimmer she once qualified for the Olympics.

She said her mother was a famous swimmer in their hometown, which inspired her to take up the sport.

Emma said: "She had all of the best times in backstroke and that ended up being my stroke as well, which is crazy. So I started, like, people would come just to watch me swim. As I got older as well, I had all the records, I ended up getting a time that qualified for the Olympics.”

One person reacted on X at the time, writing: "HOW DID EMMA INVEST IN THE STOCK MARKET AT FOURTEEN? HOW WAS SHE SIMULTANEOUSLY AN OLYMPIC SWIMMER?"

The drama intensified when SwimSwam, a swimming news organisation, did some digging.

They said: "It’s unclear exactly what Hernan meant when she said that she swam a time that qualified for the Olympics. In order to qualify for the Olympics as an American, you must first qualify for Olympic Trials and then in order to qualify for the Olympic team, you must place within the top two in an individual event at Trials while also swimming under the FINA A standard."

After hunting for any data on Emma's personal best time, they discovered that there were no records of anyone under the name Emma Hernan in any US swimming databases or even from the results of her Massachusetts High School State Championship meets."

They concluded: "While Hernan probably did swim somewhere, we just can’t find any evidence - and certainly not the kind of evidence that would exist for a swimmer who had times that qualified for the Olympics by age 16."

Awkward.

Tyla previously contacted representatives of Emma Hernan for comment.

All eight seasons of Selling Sunset are available to stream on Netflix now.
