Warning: spoilers ahead

Everyone loves a plot twist, don't they?

Whether a riveting novel stops you in your tracks, or a blockbuster hit takes a jaw-dropping turn, there's something uber exciting about the unexpected taking us by surprise.

Viewers are raving about the show.

And if you're been binging your way through Netflix's brand new romantic-drama series One Day, I hate to spoil it for you, but you have the plot twist to end all plot twists lying in wait ahead of you...

If you've already read the original 2009 David Nicholls novel of the same name, or the film adaptation released two years later - made famous by Anne Hathaway's questionable northern accent - you'll know exactly what I'm on about.

If you're yet to sink your teeth into Netflix's tear-jerking new adaptation, however, I'd avert your eyes now.

The latest version show follows the lives of two university students, Dexter - portrayed The White Lotus star Leo Woodall - and Emma - played by This is Going to Hurt's Ambika Mod - who meet on the night of their graduation.

Viewers have been left shocked by the ending.
Netflix

Despite there being a very obvious spark between the best friend duo - they don't actually end up getting together and sadly go on to lowkey regret the decision for a whole 20 years.

The Netflix limited series tells the decades-spanning love story of the titular twosome as we catch up with them on the same day every year, where they update each other on the highs and lows, trials and tribulations, achievements and heartaches of the last 12 months.

Despite a handful of temporary estrangements - due to Emma's relationship status, Dexter's alcohol dependency issues brought on by a failed TV career, and his subsequent divorce - their friendship proves able to stand the test of time.

Ambika Mod stars as lead female Emma.

And after 16 years, Emma and Dex finally confront their feelings for one another, with a passionate kiss resulting in an engagement.

They FINALLY tie the knot, and things are looking on the up for the lovebirds, until disaster strikes.

Again, if you've seen the movie version, you'll know how brutally producers opted to portray this next scene.

And Netflix in turn believed it essential to include a similar shock factor in their re-telling.

The romantic-drama landed on the streaming service last week.

Whilst cycling to meet Dexter one day, Emma is struck suddenly by an incoming car and is instantly killed upon impact... I KNOW!

And by the sounds of it, hundreds of viewers didn't see Emma's death coming, with many taking to social media to express their horror.

"End of episode 13 of One Day on Netflix you ruined my life," one blown-away viewer penned.

Another wrote: "Don’t ever reccommend anything like that to me again".

A third went on: "emotionally devastated by the one day series despite having already known the ending".

"THE ENDING?? Who put rom com under one day are u actually kidding crying myself to sleep what the actual hell" another wrote.
