Netflix subscribers have flocked to social media to praise the streaming giant's latest crime thriller, with many calling it their ‘favourite’ release of 2023.

Last month at the 48th annual Toronto International Film Festival, guests and critics alike were treated to early screenings of Dumb Money, Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins and Pain Hustlers, starring Emily Blunt and Chris Evans.

Also at TIFF this year, attendees were given the chance to watch the world premiere of Grant Singer’s Reptile - a movie that has now been released on Netflix after a limited run in US theatres.

The new mystery movie stars the iconic Benicio del Toro as detective Tom Nichols, alongside Alicia Silverstone as his wife, Judy Nichols, and Justin Timberlake as Will Grady, the victim’s boyfriend.

Following the brutal murder of an estate agent in Maine, Detective Tom begins investigating but discovers that not everything is as it seems.

As he wades deeper into the puzzle, the case begins to dismantle the illusions in his own life.

At the time of writing, the singer-directed drama is sitting with a solid 77 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, despite critics giving it 42 percent on the Tomatometer.

However, the flick, which is Timberlake’s first feature-film appearance in two years, has garnered a host of fans since it was released late last month.

Many fans of Reptile have taken to X (formerly Twitter) in an attempt to persuade the masses to watch the movie.

One fan wrote: “Reptile on Netflix, one of the best films I’ve seen in a long, long time. Brilliant.”

A second said: “#Reptile is Netflix's best film in a long, long time. Benicio Del Toro is brilliant, Alicia Silverstone is excellent & the story is gripping the whole way through. Very good to see Justin Timberlake too. Highly recommend. One of my favourites of 2023.”

“Loved this on a million different levels. Absolutely stellar watching. Still thinking about it three days on,” commented a third.

Another viewer wrote: “A fantastic movie. Arguably one of the best from Netflix this year.”

While a fifth praised: “My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed Reptile - especially the scenes with Benicio and Alicia. Benicio is always spectacular. And Alicia was pitch perfect as his wife, 'Judy'. I absolutely loved the ending. Currently the #1 movie in the USA on Netflix! Brava, Alicia."

Reptile is currently available to stream on Netflix.
