Bridgerton fans 'work out' bizarre secret reason Lady Danbury uses a cane

Bridgerton fans 'work out' bizarre secret reason Lady Danbury uses a cane

She's rarely seen without it, but fans think they've worked out the meaning behind her favourite prop

Whether you've only just started watching Bridgerton or you're a die hard fan, there are certain things that are noticeable.

One might be the obvious sexual tension between Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton in the third Netflix season, or it can be more subtle.

As subtle as accessories for the cast, which includes references to the bee that killed Viscount Edmund Bridgerton many years ago but also the props that many of the cast use, including Lady Danbury.

The opinionated and savvy Lady Danbury is often seen with a wooden cane in the TV series, which she can use to command attention with a banging on the floor, as well as pointing out details to her fellow members of The Ton. Whether she uses it because of an injury or just for a show, we still don't know.

She can be heard referring to her knees and implying it's used due to age, as she jokes in season one when Queen Charlotte asks why she can't curtsey lower, to which she replies: "What, with these knees?"

And whilst we rarely see her without her stately cane, she has been known to give it up. In season two, she throws it to one side and dances with Anthony Bridgerton and also takes part in a country jig with the Bridgerton and Sharma families.

Fans have also speculated on Facebook why she might be using a cane, with some referring to the books where Lady Danbury uses her cane often to make a point.

One person wrote: "In the books, she likes to thump it to make a point, to demand attention, and to injure the toes of people she doesn’t like or who cross her. I adore the book Lady Danbury. She is such a plotter."

Adjoa Andoh, the actress who has played Lady Danbury for the past three seasons and featured in the spin-off series Queen Charlotte, has also explained how the cane can be used for a secret meaning.

Speaking to New African Magazine, she explained that Regency men of the period were rarely seen without a cane and hat and that as a wealthy widow Lady Danbury has both to show her authority whilst blending masculinity and femininity.

She said: "For me, the fact that she’s a widow meant that I wanted her to embody some of the masculine within her feminine. So, I requested a hat. I love a hat!"

Whilst we're talking about props on the latest season of Bridgerton, some Netflix fans have noted that Eloise Bridgerton seems to be sporting some rather odd accessories. In various scenes she can be seen with huge and extravagant cuffs on her sleeves of her dresses and jackets, and whilst it's the height of summer these seem an odd choice.

However, there was actually a good reason behind why actress Claudia Jessie had such an odd style. The actress had actually broken her wrist whilst filming was taking place.

She explained how the unfortunately timed injury happened: "It was a Friday morning, and I got there it was like 8am, we hadn’t even started filming. To celebrate everyone’s good mood, I did a high kick."

She said that because of the dress she was wearing on set, her leg was "restricted immediately" and she fell. Whilst everyone laughed, it soon became very obvious that she had badly hurt herself and would need to wear a cast, which then needed to be hidden whilst they filmed season three.
