People mortified after realising what Lady Gaga’s Poker Face lyrics actually are

You mean, it's not actually about poker?

People are absolutely mortified after realising the true meaning behind Lady Gaga's 2000s hit 'Poker Face' and the comments are hilarious.

The year was 2008 and Lady Gaga had my entire year eight class in a chokehold after gracing us with smash hits like her debut single 'Just Dance' and, of course, 'Poker Face'.

I remember blaring the song from my red Sony Ericsson, dancing along with my friends at break time but, perhaps if I had known what the tune was actually about, it would have been a different story.

'Poker Face' was Gaga's second release after bursting onto the scene in 2008 and nearly 20 years on, people are only just realising the banger has absolutely nothing to do with a game of poker.

In case you need a reminder of the lyrics, the song opens with the iconic and unmistakable 'Mum-mum-mum-mah,' before saying: "I wanna hold 'em like they do in Texas, please (Woo) / Fold 'em, let 'em hit me, raise it, baby, stay with me (I love it)."

The song won a Grammy at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards (Kevork Djansezian / Staff)

Seems innocent enough, but it's not until we get to the chorus that the real NSFW meaning behind the song comes to light.

A video posted on Instagram by @laurenwolfe reveals the unedited version of the song, as what we once thought was an innocent, 'Po-po-po-poker face, po-po-po-poker face (Mum-mum-mum-mah),' is actually 'Po-po-po-poker face, fu-fu-f*** her face (Mum-mum-mum-mah), Po-po-po-poker face, fu-fu-f*** her face (Mum-mum-mum-mah)'.

Gaga, I was 12 when that came out!

Wolfe captioned the video with a simple 'I was today years old' and it didn't take long for people to comment with shock and horror.

One pointed out: "The radio stations didn’t even catch this."

While another added: "Guys I just googled the lyrics...... she's right so they fr didnt put the clean version on the radio."

Someone else echoed Wolfe's comment: "I WAS TODAY YEARS OLD-," as someone else screamed: "Omg checked the lyrics online and this isn’t even a joke…"

I mean, with lines like: "And baby, when it's love, if it's not rough, it isn't fun, fun," and "Cause I'm bluffin' with my muffin I'm not lyin', I'm just stunnin' with my love-glue-gunnin'," are we really surprised?

'Poker Face' featured on Gaga's debut album The Fame and won the Grammy for Best Dance Recording at the 52nd ceremony in 2010.

In case there was any doubt as to whether those lyrics were just made up in the minds of fans, Gaga actually performed the uncensored version during a performance at her Las Vegas residency back in 2023. She very clearly sang, 'Po-po-po-poker face, fu-fu-f*** her face', while performing a stripped back version on piano, to the crowd's delight.

NSFW or not, the song will always be a classic.
