If there’s one thing guaranteed to send the Love Island villa into chaos, it’s hearing an Islander suddenly scream, “I’ve got a text!”
Whether it’s the news of a shock dumping, a dramatic recoupling or the arrival of a brand-new bombshell, those iconic messages have become one of the most recognisable parts of the show.
While fans know exactly what happens when a text arrives, there’s one question that comes up every single series: why do the Islanders even have phones in the first place?
After all, contestants are supposed to be completely cut off from the outside world while they’re in the villa.

Former Islander Amy Hart has answered the question countless times in her Love Island Q&A videos on TikTok where she has revealed bits of what life is actually like behind the scenes at Love Island.
What phones do the Love Islanders use?
For series 13 of Love Island UK, ITV confirmed that Islanders are given a Google Pixel 10 Pro phone while they’re in the villa.
The standout feature is definitely the camera.
Let's be honest, if any reality TV show needs a good camera phone, it's Love Island.

The villa is packed with bright sunshine during the day, mood lighting at night and plenty of opportunities for group shots, selfies and spontaneous photo dumps.
The Google Pixel 10 Pro is designed with photography at its core, delivering crisp images, impressive detail and strong low-light performance.
Whether Islanders are snapping a pre-party mirror selfie, capturing their best angles by the pool or taking group pictures before a big recoupling, the phone is built to handle it.
It's also ideal for the kind of content viewers have come to expect from the show's social channels, where behind-the-scenes villa photos often end up being shared with fans.

What is on the Love Island phones?
The short answer to what’s actually on the Love Island phones is not very much.
One of the biggest misconceptions among viewers is that Islanders can browse social media, search the internet or keep up with what’s happening outside the villa.
They can’t.
According to Amy Hart's TikTok Q&As, the phones are heavily restricted.
“All they had on them with your picture as the background, and then you could just take photos”, explained Amy.
They’re also primarily used for Islanders to communicate with producers, too.
The most important function though is receiving those famous text alerts that tell Islanders about upcoming challenges, dates, recouplings, bombshell arrivals and dumpings.
Without the phones, we wouldn't have the iconic villa-wide announcement that has become synonymous with the show.
As well as receiving texts, Islanders can also use the devices to take photos and videos throughout their time in the villa.
That's pretty much it.
Contestants are intentionally kept away from the outside world so that relationships can develop without influence from social media, public opinion or breaking news.

Do the Love Island phones have the time on them?
Another question people have about the phones on Love Island is whether or not they have the time on them.
While the phones technically display a time, former Islanders have repeatedly claimed it isn’t always accurate.
Amy Hart backed this up, saying, “They all had a time on them, but they were all different, so none of them was right”.
Production deliberately removes many of the usual ways people track time, including clocks around the villa.
The result is that contestants often have very little idea whether it's 10pm, midnight or much later so they can focus purely on what’s happening in the villa rather than counting down the hours.
It might sound strange, but it's all part of the Love Island experience.
Why are Islanders allowed phones at all?
The phones serve two important purposes.
Firstly, they allow producers to communicate directly with the contestants, but secondly, it’s because of the texts.
Those texts are a crucial part of how the show operates.
Rather than having producers constantly interrupting conversations, messages can be sent directly to Islanders and read aloud to the group.
The phones also allow Islanders to document their own experience through photos and videos, giving fans a glimpse into moments that don't always make the final edit.

Do Islanders get to keep their phones?
After spending a long, hot summer in the villa, another perk for the Islanders would be getting to keep their phones with all the memories from their time.
Sadly for them, that isn’t the case.
While Islanders use the phones throughout their time on the show to receive texts from producers and take photos around the villa, the devices don't go home with them when their Love Island journey comes to an end.
Former Islander Amy Hart addressed the question during one of her Love Island TikTok Q&As, explaining that contestants don't even get to keep the photos they've taken during filming.
She said, "No, sadly, you don't get to keep all the photos. Some of them will have been uploaded to the Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts, but everything gets wiped when you leave because your phone goes to the next Islander that comes in."
The revelation surprised many fans, particularly because Islanders can be seen constantly taking selfies, couple photos and group snaps throughout the series.
It also explains why so many of those images end up appearing on Love Island's social media accounts rather than the contestants' own profiles.
The phones are essentially part of the production setup, meaning they're reset and prepared for whichever bombshell or late arrival walks into the villa next.

Despite spending all day with a smartphone in their hand, Islanders are actually far more disconnected than most people realise.
The Google Pixel 10 Pro phones aren't there for scrolling social media or keeping up with the latest headlines.
They're simply used for receiving texts from producers and capturing memories from life inside the villa for the show to use in behind-the-scenes content on socials.
