Zac Efron has been defended by fans after 'looking different' in his new film following a horrifying freak accident.

The 36-year-old 17 Again actor stars alongside Hollywood A-lister, Nicole Kidman, in one of Netflix's latest releases - A Family Affair.

Released only over the weekend (28 June), the film has already impressively climbed to the prestigious 'No. 1 in Films Today' spot.

However, it's clear many viewers are far too concerned with the way Zac looks to be able to enjoy the rom-com about a vain movie star who falls for his assistant's widowed mum...

Fans have since rushed to social media to share their reactions to Zac's allegedly changed appearance.

One X user penned: "Watched that A Family Affair movie

"Looked up Zac Efron’s age. 36?!?!?!?!?! No way. He looks easily in his 40s What on earth has he done to his face.. I just.. I couldn’t stop looking at it. Same for Nicole Kidman’s face and hair. Was that a wig."

A second cruelly slammed: "Just watched A Family Affair on Netflix..watchable..however the main thing I took away was the mess plastic surgery has taken on the faces of Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron ..beyond ridiculous."

And another hit out: "Watching A Family Affair with my parents and they are spending the entire runtime unpicking Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman’s facial procedures. Which is better to listen to than the movie."

People on Facebook also decided to share their nasty comments about the two actors' appearances with one writing: "No chemistry between Zac and Nicole, and I can't watch the plastic surgery faces anymore, it's creepy. Didn't finish the movie."

Meanwhile, a final social media user defended: "Zac had not much choice in the matter as his jaw just about fell off and major reconstructive surgeries was required after a freak accident in his home...."

This is far from the first time people have made harsh comments about the High School Musical star's appearance as his devoted fans also previously came to his defence by reminding others about his horrific jaw injury.

Previously speaking to Men's Health, the actor said he shattered his jaw while running in the house.

He said he fell while wearing slippery socks and hit his chin against a granite corner of a fountain, knocking himself out in the process.

After waking up, he said he realised his 'chin bone was hanging off his face'.

"The masseters just grew. They just got really, really big," he recalled.

He later told Entertainment Tonight that he nearly died following the accident, explaining: "It was funny. It sucks. I almost died, but we're good."

A Family Affair is currently available to stream on Netflix.
