Travis Kelce suffers financial loss after being named as victim in multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme

Travis Kelce has been named as one of the victims in a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end was identified by federal prosecutors as one of 64 victims in a huge $35 million Ponzi scheme.

The scheme's operator was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison. Siddharth Jawahar, 38, pleased guilty to three counts of wire fraud and was ordered to pay $31.5 million in restitution.

He owned an investment firm called Swiftcar Capital LLC which was based in Texas, according to the US department of justice.

Jawahar channeled the majority of his clients’ money into a firm named Philip Morris Pakistan.

According to a statement from the US attorney’s office, Jawahar is accused of claiming to his clients that they were making profits when this was false.

“When the value of PMP declined, Jawahar did not tell investors and falsely claimed that his investors were making profits.”

Jawahar received around $35m from investors but only $10m of this sum was actually invested. The rest of the money was used to fund luxury hotels, apartments and private jets, according to the US attorney’s office.

Jawahar is originally from India but had been living in the US illegally since 2005, according to prosecutors.

After is indictment, Jawahar, "tried to obstruct justice by trying to coach a victim into giving a favorable statement to the FBI, lying about his immigration status and finances and trying to get his sister to remotely wipe his iPhone to hide evidence," the US attorney's statement said.

In a statement shared with ABC News, Jawahar’s attorney said: “Sid Jawahar is a very good man, who has made some very serious mistakes and is taking ownership of all of it. e has made every effort from a jail cell in St. Genevieve [County] to recoup restitution for victims and plans to continue to do. His efforts at helping other inmates improve their lives at St. Genevieve speak the loudest about his true character and heart for service."

Local television station KMOV reported that the prosecutor mentioned Kelce’s name but provided no further comment. It remains unclear when Kelce made the investment or how much he spent.

In other news, the Kansas City Chiefs played their first game of the season this week which ended with a 31-10 victory over the Denver Broncos.

Taylor Swift, Kelce's wife, watched from the stands alongside actor Tom Cruise.

While fans might have expected either party to attend the 2026 Emmy Awards, which took place the same night (14 Sept), Swift and Cruise seemed to be enjoying one another's company at the sports game.

The singer, 36, and actor, 64, were seen chatting closely with one another during one segment of the game, immediately sparking curiosity from fans over what they could have possibly been discussing.

Many observers were shocked to learn that the pair are apparently friends.

Swift's appearance with Cruise at the NFL game comes just two months after she and Kelce tied the knot at New York's Madison Square Garden.
