Taylor Swift fans have come out in force to defend the ‘Love Story’ hitmaker after her ex boyfriend’s mum brutally took aim at her on an American talk show this week.
For those who aren’t up to speed, The 1975 frontman Matty Healy had a fleeting romance with Taylor back in May 2023, following years of friendship.
Then in April 2024, the singer released her eleventh studio album, The Tortured Poets Department - and fans were convinced that some of the songs were inspired by their short-lived relationship, despite this never being confirmed.

Fast forward to this week, Matty’s mum, Denise Welch, made an appearance on Bravo TV's Watch What Happens Live on Thursday (24 July).
And of course, she was quizzed by host Andy Cohen about her son’s very famous ex-girlfriend and what she made of the whole relationship and the break-up that followed.
Denise definitely didn’t mince her words as she made a very savage comment about Taylor that has since gone viral on social media.

The moment in question saw the host ask: “Denise, your son is the great Matty Healy. On that topic, Miss Swift wrote a whole album about their relationship, The Tortured Poets Department. What was your reaction to that album?”
Denise brutally responded: “Obviously, on pain of death, can I talk about that episode but not being her mother-in-law is a role that I’m glad that I lost.”
After a murmur of shock from the crowd, she continued: “Not that I have anything against her at all.
"It was just, you know, it was tricky, listen, you’re not allowed to say anything and then she writes a whole album about it.

“But Matty has taken it all completely in good grace, he’s very happy with his amazing fiancée Gabriella - Gabbriette - who is gorgeous, so we’ve moved on.”
But as the comments are making their way around the internet, fans are all making the same hilarious point - a lot of Americans don’t know Denise aside from being Matty’s mum.
Those of us in the UK know she’s famous in her own right, having been a star of ITV’s Loose Women since 2005 and also having an acting career that’s spanned across a number of British soaps.

But it seems that even some Brits don’t know that Denise is Matty’s mum, and simply know her as someone from TV.
Reacting to the clip, one Twitter user wrote: “I always forget that Denise Welch is Matty Healy's mum.”
While a second added: “The Swifties in the comments not being aware how famous she is in the UK is frying me.”

A third went on to joke: “The fact Denise Welch has cracked America,” with a fourth chiming in: “The concept of seeing Denise Welch on Watch What Happens Live with Cohen is wild.”
Another shocked user simply questioned: “Denise Welch is Matt Healys mother?”
Someone else penned: “Watching the swifties beefing with Denise Welch.. this is top tier entertainment.”
And another social media user wrote: "I was today years old when I found out that Denise Welch could have been Taylor Swifts MIL #WWHL."
