Taylor Swift’s new song ‘Patient Zero’ has only been out for a matter of days, but listeners are already convinced they may have worked out the real-life story behind it.
The track appears on The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, an expanded edition of Swift’s 2025 album.
It finds the singer looking back at a relationship with a man whose bad behaviour apparently continued long after they were together.
Except, there’s another woman in the story.

Rather than painting her as a romantic rival, Swift positions herself as someone who understands exactly what she has been through.
That premise has sparked a theory that ‘Patient Zero’ could have been inspired by Joe Jonas and his ex-wife Sophie Turner.
Swift and Jonas briefly dated in 2008, when both were still teenagers.

Their split became pop culture history after Swift claimed he ended their relationship during a phone call lasting just 27 seconds.
More than a decade later, Jonas married Game of Thrones star Turner.
The couple tied the knot in 2019 and welcomed two daughters before Jonas filed for divorce in September 2023.
What followed was an intensely public separation, including a legal dispute over arrangements for their children.
Their divorce was eventually finalised in 2024.
It was during the fallout that an unexpected connection caught fans’ attention: Turner began spending time with Swift.
The two women were photographed together in New York, and Turner later revealed just how significant Swift’s support had been during that period.
Speaking to British Vogue in 2024, she said: “I’ve never been more grateful to anyone than I am for her because she took my children and me, and provided us with a home and a safe space.”
That friendship now looks particularly interesting in light of ‘Patient Zero’.
The song revolves around the idea of a woman recognising troubling behaviour in a man because she experienced it first.
Swift turns the medical term “patient zero”, which is commonly used to describe the first identified case in an outbreak, into a relationship metaphor.
In the chorus, she sings about knowing ‘the devil on his shoulder under his halo’ before offering solidarity to someone else caught in the same situation: “But if you’re sick of him, I got you / I was patient zero.”
Swift was romantically involved with Jonas years before Turner, while Turner later became one of Swift’s friends as her marriage to Jonas ended.
The sequence fits the basic framework of the song, but there are obviously some fairly large caveats.
Swift has not said ‘Patient Zero’ is about Jonas, Turner or anybody else.
She has spent much of her career watching listeners attach names to songs that may combine real experiences, fictional elements and details taken from several relationships.
There are competing theories too.
Some fans believe the track contains echoes of Swift’s six-year relationship with actor Joe Alwyn, particularly because ‘Patient Zero’ shares medical imagery with ‘You’re Losing Me’, a song widely associated with the end of that relationship.
Others have suggested the subject could be a composite rather than one identifiable ex.
Still, the Jonas-Turner interpretation has one thing going for it that many Swift theories do not: there really is a well-documented friendship between Swift and a woman who subsequently divorced one of her ex-boyfriends.
Given Swift’s reputation for turning tiny pieces of personal history into much larger stories, that coincidence was never going to escape the internet’s attention.
