Miley Cyrus reveals devastating effect her wild child era really had on personal life

Miley Cyrus admitted to feeling 'embarrassed' to look her dad in the eye during one point in her career

Miley Cyrus has opened up about the true impact that her '2013 era' had on her personal life and how it led to the breakdown of relationships.

The 32-year-old megastar rose to fame at an early age, when she appeared as Hannah Montana on Disney Channel between 2006 and 2011.

The show quickly became extremely popular, and she soon realised that her new-found fame wasn't going away any time soon.

Similar to a lot of other children who grew up in the spotlight, including Justin Bieber, Miley had her 'wild child era' in 2013, just after beginning her journey as a solo artist.

It was the year that she released songs like 'Wrecking Ball' and went viral for her infamous MTV VMAs performance with Robin Thicke, but she's since revealed the real impact it had on her personal life behind the scenes.

During a recent (10 June) appearance on the Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky podcast, the star said: "It was really hard for me in 2013, and I lost everything during that time in my personal life, because of the choices I was making professionally.

"You know if I kept dressing and acting in a certain way, my relationships fell apart."

But it seems the problem was rooted in sexism, according to the musician.

Miley added: "No one wanted to date me because they didn’t want to be with a woman whose sexual expression was not for them. It was like shared with the world.

"So when I would try to date guys, or when I was engaged, that didn’t work out because I was sharing a part of myself that men wanted to be saved only for them."

The singer noted that her style choices were a real issue too.

She said: "The fact that I would you know, pose nude, or dance in very little clothes, or show my body, was making them feel like I was taking something away that was meant to be for them."

But it wasn't just her romantic relationships that were affected, Miley also spoke about feeling awkward around her family members.

"It was really hard for me to go home and see my dad, and look him in the eyes and not feel super embarrassed," she said.

"Same thing with my grandmother, she’s dead but she’s still my best friend, and I was like ‘Oh God, is this going to kill her’."

The childhood star was engaged to Liam Hemsworth in 2012, but there romance was called off a year later.

They managed to rekindle their love in 2016, and even got married just two years later.

But the pair ultimately called it quits for good the following year.
