Miley Cyrus reveals heartbreaking way she tried to save her relationship with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth

Miley Cyrus has candidly lifted the lid on the heartbreaking way she tried to keep her marriage to Liam Hemsworth afloat, before they eventually finalised their divorce in 2020.

We all remember Miley’s’ Bangerz 'era back in 2013, when she did a complete 180 from her Hannah Montana days and slipped into a more edgy and rebellious persona.

From stripping off and swinging from a ‘Wrecking Ball’ in her music video, to twerking on Robin Thicke at the AMAs, the singer’s every move was getting some serious attention from the media.

At the time, she was also in a relationship with Aussie actor Liam, after the duo met while filming Nicholas Sparks’ The Last Song in June 2009.

They got engaged for the first time in 2012, but the romance was short-lived and was called off by September 2013.

Then, after a few years apart, fans were delighted when Miley and Liam rekindled again in 2016 and tied the knot by 2018.

But again, they ended up parting ways less than a year later as a representative said they wanted to 'focus on themselves and careers'.

Since divorcing, the famous pair have rarely commented on the details of their relationship and breakup.

But now, Miley has given a rare insight into the off-on relationship that spanned more than a decade - including a sad way she tried to keep things going.

Speaking on the Every Single Album podcast on Sunday (6 June) the ‘Flowers’ hitmaker delved into the reason they broke up the first time around.

Talking about The Last Song, she said: “That’s where I met Liam, who I would go on to marry and write a ton of, or, most of, my songs about.”

Miley explained how she tried to go back to her innocent image with her sixth album Younger Now in 2017, in an effort to keep Liam around as the two were back together by then.

She said: "When me and Liam split up the first time with Bangerz because I was this provocateur, like, highly sexualised.”

Miley added: "For Younger Now, the reason I kind of played into this innocence was because I think it was a way to keep - a way to stay - by being younger now and a less sexualized woman publicly, and this was a way to keep a happy home.”

However, the former couple went on to split less than a year after walking down the aisle, before the divorce was finalised in 2020.

But, all’s well that ends well and Miley is now happily dating Lilly drummer Maxx Morando and being her authentic self - go girl.

Meanwhile, Liam has reportedly been in a relationship with model Gabriella Brooks for four years.
