Fans are re-watching Liam Payne’s X Factor audition after the tragic news of his death aged 31.

It was confirmed last night (16 October) that the former One Direction star sadly died after falling from a third-floor balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Emergency services reported that 'the injuries he had suffered as a result of the fall proved to be fatal'.

Payne, who was in Argentina to attend a show of former bandmate Niall Horan earlier this month, first rose to fame after appearing on the ITV talent show back in 2010 when the group was formed.

He and Horan were joined by the likes Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik with big hits including 'What Makes You Beautiful', 'Kiss You', 'Night Changes' and 'Best Song Ever'.

Although Payne joined 1D in 2010, he actually previously auditioned for the show two years prior in 2008 aged just 14.

He sang Frank Sinatra's 'Fly Me to the Moon' and advanced past the first round.

The then-teen made it to the Judges' Houses stage, but judge Simon Cowell advised him to go back to school and re-audition again two years later.

He did exactly that and auditioned again aged 16 and chose Michael Bublé's rendition of 'Cry Me A River'. Have a look:

After making it through the auditions, Payne went on to be put in a group with the four other lads to form One Direction.

Although the band finished in third place, they went on to become one of the best-selling boy groups of all time.

All in all, the band has sold more than 70 million records worldwide and they also have over 21 billion streams on streaming platforms.

Others accolades for One Direction include six Billboard Music Awards, seven Brit Awards, seven American Music Awards and a staggering 28 Teen Choice Awards.

After watching the resurfaced clips, fans have rushed in to share their tributes with one Twitter user writing: "Liam Payne's death does not feel real to me at all and it’s making me so sad. I can’t believe it. I vividly remember watching his X Factor audition for the first time when I was a 10 year old little girl and being obsessed with him… Rest in peace Liam."

And another penned: "From that X Factor audition to becoming part of one of the most important boy bands in the world, Liam Payne's journey was incredible. Thank you for your music and all the memories."
