Ellen DeGeneres blames one thing for fleeing the US with wife but people are seriously divided

The former talk show host confirmed the reports which started circling when she first made the move back in November 2024

Ellen DeGeneres has pointed to one specific reason behind her decision to leave the United States with her wife, Portia de Rossi, but it's left people seriously divided.

In November of last year, the 67-year-old former talk show host left the US with plans to 'never return' with the pair reportedly making the move due to Donald Trump's presidential re-election following the loss of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

An anonymous source further claimed that she and Portia had settled in the Cotswolds in Southwest England.

Her move overseas also came after she took aim at toxicity in Hollywood as part of her recent Netflix special, For Your Approval.

However, speaking in a live interview yesterday (20 July), Ellen has since confirmed to broadcaster Richard Bacon that Trump most definitely played a role in the couple's relocation.

She said a very clear 'yes', as per the BBC, when Bacon asked if such reports were true.

Ellen went on to explain that, initially, she thought that she and Portia would spend just three or four months of the year at their 'part-time house' in the Cotswolds.

But those plans went out the window when Trump was re-elected.

Ellen recalled that she and her wife 'got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, 'He got in.' … And we're like, 'We're staying here'.

In the same conversation, which took place outside Cheltenham's Everyman theatre, Ellen also shared her thoughts on how she was finding life in the UK.

"It's absolutely beautiful," she gushed, adding that she and Portia are 'just not used to seeing this kind of beauty'.

"The villages and the towns and the architecture — everything you see is charming and it's just a simpler way of life." the actor continued.

"We moved here in November, which was not the ideal time, but I saw snow for the first time in my life. We love it here. Portia flew her horses here, and I have chickens, and we had sheep for about two weeks."

And it's not just the natural vistas which the pair love, as she added: "Everything here is just better - the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here."

Upon hearing Ellen's recent remarks, a few fans were left quite divided and rushed to social media to share their thoughts.

One Instagram user penned: "Politics aside, no matter who's in charge, I believe that if you truly love your country, you don’t walk away from it. You stay and stand up for it."

"When you truly love your country... You stay and you fight for what you believe," piped up another, while a third chimed in: "Quitter. I love my country more than I hate him."

Others, however, supported Ellen's choice but merely lamented that they didn't have the funds to 'escape' America too.

"Lucky them. Wish I could afford to move too," wrote a fourth.

A fifth declared: "A LOT of us wish we could afford to do that."

"You are blessed to be able to escape this INSANITY," pointed out a sixth.
