Ashley Cain has shared the heartbreaking way he ‘told’ late daughter Azaylia he’s having another baby, saying he knew he had to ‘talk to her’ about it before anyone else.
However, tragedy struck just eight weeks later when she was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer, later passing away at eight months.
The reality star and former footballer has now announced the happy, albeit perhaps bittersweet, news that he and his current partner are expecting.
Speaking to The Sun, he said that ex Safiyya found the news understandably ‘painful’, but that she ultimately had nothing but ‘respect’ for him.
“It was painful for Safiyya but it was also painful for me as well to talk to her,” he said.
“We haven’t been together for a while now and it is inevitable that at some stage people are going to move on with their lives - that doesn’t mean that we can’t be friends and have an amazing relationship.
“I know Safiyya will always support me and I will always be there to support Safiyya. It wasn’t an easy conversation or filled with smiles but it was a conversation that had a lot of truth and respect.”
But there was someone else he knew he had to tell first.
“The first thing that I did was go down to Azaylia’s resting place to talk to her about it,” Ashley recalled to The Sun.
“I believe that was a huge part that has allowed me to feel positive about it. I feel like she was the main person that I needed to speak to and to get this thing off my chest.
“After going to her resting place and speaking to her about it, I just had a feeling in my heart and in my soul that she was happy for me.
“She was happy that she had a little brother and it is now just someone else for her to watch over and protect in this world.”
Ashley is expecting a baby boy - his first child with his unnamed current partner.
He said the pregnancy hasn't been plain sailing as the couple found out at 20 weeks that their unborn child has a potential heart defect.
“He has got to go for a scan as soon as he is born to make sure and double check,” he added.
“I am saying my prayers, believing positive things and getting myself in the right mindframe either way to be there for her and my son.”
