Warning: this article discusses suicide which some readers may find distressing.

Angelina Jolie is known for her weird and wonderful behaviour both on and off screen, but one action in particular has been perplexing people for more than two decades.

49-year-old Jolie, whose accolades include two Academy Awards, three Golden Globes, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Tony.

Currently starring in Netflix release Maria, based upon the life of opera singer María Callas, Jolie's performance is attracting a lot of Oscar buzz, with the actress being tipped for yet another win.

But it was Jolie's appearance at the 2000 Oscars ceremony that has led to the widespread confusion.

Jolie, who was 24-years-old at the time, took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress as a result of her incredible performance in Girl, Interrupted, directed by James Mangold.

When collecting the coveted award, Jolie said: "I’m in shock, and I’m so in love with my brother right now.

"He just held me and said he loved me, and I know he’s so happy for me. And, um, thank you for that."

Though that wasn't the part that shocked the public.

Taking to the red carpet following her win, she was joined by her brother, James Haven.

It was then that she kissed him on the lips. But why?

Jolie emphatically stated it was just 'brotherly love,' stating to Entertainment Weekly: "My parents really loved that moment, and that’s what will always matter."

Haven later weighed in on the polarising moment, telling the Daily Mail years later in 2007: "I did not give Angie a French kiss. It was something simple and lovely. She was about to go off to Mexico to finish filming Original Sin with Antonio Banderas.

"I congratulated her on the Oscar win and gave her a quick kiss on the lips. It was snapped and became a big thing."

While this may be the wildest Jolie moment, it's not the only shocking one.

The critically acclaimed actress has revealed that she once hired a hit man to carry out a murder - her own.

She told The Face: "[Hitmen are] not that hard to find in New York. As insane as it sounds, I think a lot of people consider suicide when they’re young.

"I was very aware that so many people around me, like my mother, would feel as though they didn’t give enough or do enough, if I’d taken my own life."

Angelina added: "So my solution to that was if someone else had taken my life – like in a 'robbery' - then it would be murder and it wouldn’t be that anyone would feel they’d let me down."

She concluded: "He was a decent enough person and asked if I could think about it and call him again in two months," she added.

"Something changed in my life and I figured I’d stick it out."
