Fans of Stranger Things have had to endure a very long wait for season four. Unfortunately there hasn't been any new episodes since season three dropped on Netflix in July 2019.

Luckily, the stars of the show and the creators have teased the upcoming fourth instalment, including David Harbour, who plays Hopper.

David has already given a hint about a surprising backstory for his character that will be unveiled in season four and now the actor has given fans some much needed info about his character's fate after the cliff-hanger at the end of season three.

Speaking to People, David said fans will see "a lot of your favourite characters doing the thing that you love them for ... but you'll also see them twist it and turn it into other colours and other flavours."

This sounds exciting - who doesn't love a good twist?

David went into further detail regarding Hopper's "twist", he said: "One of the great things that you can see with Hopper is that he was a protector, he's a man of justice [and] he now has become a prisoner. He's trapped and he's isolated.

"And we get to see an entirely other colour of him that has been hinted at," Harbour added, before confirming season four is his "favourite" so far, thanks to Hopper's "new colours".

"[We're going to see] what he's really made up of."

Luckily the creators have since confirmed that the show won't end at the fourth instalment. The premiere date is still TBD after a number of shows were forced to halt filming due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The delay in production may even have a positive effect on the show. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, creators Ross and Matt Duffer announced the news, explaining the pandemic has given them more time to work on scripts.

Ross said: "Season four won't be the end. We know what the end is, and we know when it is.

"[The coronavirus pandemic] has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story."

Matt added: "We've had a lot more time to work on the scripts. For the first time, we have all the scripts written and we're able to look at it as a whole piece and make adjustments."

Now is an exciting time to be a Stranger Things fan!
