Season four is currently filming and when asked by US Weekly to describe the new season with one word, Gaten said: "Yikes."

"Yikes" can interpreted several ways, but when Gaten was pressed to expand on his word choice, he said: "I think most people would probably say it's the scariest [season] out of the previous three, which I love because it's very fun to film."

Season three saw a huge showdown between the gang and a giant monster and the stakes are higher than ever before. We also witnessed the apparent death of Chief Hopper (David Harbour), who sacrificed himself to save others. Luckily for fans, his 'death' may not be what it originally seemed - David Harbour teased the new season himself last month and he said it was his favourite so far.

Speaking to People, David said fans will see "a lot of your favourite characters doing the thing that you love them for ... but you'll also see them twist it and turn it into other colours and other flavours."

David went into further detail regarding Hopper's "twist", adding: "One of the great things that you can see with Hopper is that he was a protector, he's a man of justice [and] he now has become a prisoner. He's trapped and he's isolated."

"And we get to see an entirely other colour of him that has been hinted at," Harbour continued, before confirming season four is his "favourite" so far, thanks to Hopper's "new colours".

"[We're going to see] what he's really made up of."

In the meantime, fans have speculated on Reddit the real fate of Chief Hopper. one fan claimed Hopper is actually stuck in Kamchatka, Russia. What?!

Reddit User tarannn25 posted a picture of a scene from the season three finale when Hopper seemingly dies during his effort to close the gate to the Upside Down. The savvy viewer noted how he might have been able to escape with one detail.

"This scene from the last episode of season three clearly shows a ladder to climb down the platform," the Reddit user wrote. "And that's how I think Hopper escaped successfully from there."

Gaten said most of the cast was prepared for Hopper's unlikely return. "I guess most of the cast had a pretty good idea that he might be making a return, but they weren't too sure about it from the beginning,
