Love Island is set to honour the late Caroline Flack as it returns tonight, two days after it was announced she had died by suicide.

The show was cancelled on both Saturday and Sunday "out of respect for Caroline's family", and will air a tribute to her this evening.

The broadcaster added: "Love Island will return tomorrow night which will include a tribute to Caroline who will be forever in our hearts".

The TV presenter, who was due to appear in court next month charged with assaulting her boyfriend, tragically passed away at her east London flat on Saturday.

A joint statement from the star's family said: "We can confirm that our Caroline passed away today on the 15th February.

"We would ask that the press both respect the privacy of the family at this difficult time."

The heartbreaking news comes after Caroline's boyfriend Lewis Burton reached out to her on Instagram to publicly wish her a happy Valentine's Day - despite being banned from speaking to her ahead of her trial.

Just last month, he also spoke out in defence of the 40-year-old Love Island host, saying he was "tired of the lies and abuse" aimed at her following her arrest for alleged assault against him in her north London home in December - which Caroline also denied.

Since the news of her death surfaced, tributes have been pouring in for Caroline - including a moving statement from Laura Whitmore, who took over from her as host of the ITV dating show while her trial took place.

She said that Caroline "loved to laugh" and had the "most infectious chuckle".

Urging people to "be kind" to others, she added: "Caroline loved to love. That's all she wanted. Which is why a show like Love Island was important to her, because the show is about finding love, friendship, having a laugh.

"The problem wasn't the show. The show... is loving and caring and safe and protected. The problem is, the outside world is not.

"Anyone who has ever compared one woman against another on Twitter, knocked someone because of their appearance, invaded someone else's privacy, who have made mean, unnecessary comments on an online forum - they need to look at themselves".

Other posts include a moving statement from Caroline's boyfriend Lewis.

On Sunday, he shared an image of the two of them together to his Instagram account, writing: "My heart is broken we had something so special.

"I am so lost for words I am in so much pain I miss you so much I know you felt safe with me you always said I don't think about anything else when I am with you and I was not allowed to be there this time I kept asking and asking.

"I will be your voice baby I promise I will ask all the questions you wanted and I will get all the answers nothing will bring you back but I will try make you proud everyday. I love you with all my heart."

Love Island returns to ITV2 tonight at 9pm with a tribute to Caroline.
