After 12 incredible years, Jesse Williams is bidding farewell to Grey Sloan Hospital at the end of season 17 of Grey's Anatomy.

Yep, Dr Jackson Avery will hang up his scrubs one last time at the end of this month after joining in season 6, where viewers watched as he fell in love with fellow doctor, April Kepner, tragically lost a baby son and eventually welcomed a daughter, Harriet together.

The final story arc for the character will wrap up when the last episode, titled "Tradition" airs on ABC in the US on May 20. On Thursday's episode Jackson visited his father (played by Eric Roberts) and has a heart-to-heart with his ex April who has been living in Seattle with their daughter Harriet after marrying Matthew Taylor.

It was revealed that Jackson plans to take over the Avery family foundation which involves him moving to Boston. In a bombshell moment, it is revealed that Jackson wants April, their daughter Harriet and Matthew to follow him there so he can be part of his daughter's life.

Fans were given a glimmer of hope that their favourite couple in the medical drama would rekindle when April dropped her own bomb - she and Michael had split up. Will we see #Japril back together once again?!

After joining the show in 2009, Jesse Williams' character became one of the most popular and most crushed-on by viewers. Jesse was promoted to a series regular in season 7 when Jackson won even more hearts. The role won Jesse an NAACP Image Award.

Outside of acting, Jesse is also an activist who has been outspoken about raising awareness of the struggles faced by African-Americans.

Although the news of Jackson's exit is not what we ever wanted to hear, this season of Grey's Anatomy has proven that familiar faces from the past can come back in the most unlikely ways. We are, of course, referring to Patrick Dempsey AKA McDreamy's unexpected return after his character died in a car accident at the end of season 11.

In what was undoubtedly one of 2020's biggest plot twists - and there were quite a few last year - Patrick came back from the dead in dream sequence in which Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek are reunited.

As far as we know Jackson will live to tell after his final episode but we still have our fingers crossed that he will be back one day. Even if it's just for a few seconds on a beach.
