Patrick Dempsey Makes Shock Grey's Anatomy Return From The Dead In Season 17 Premiere

Patrick Dempsey Makes Shock Grey's Anatomy Return From The Dead In Season 17 Premiere

In what is undoubtedly one of the biggest and most unexpected twists of 2020, Patrick Dempsey's Derek Shepherd aka McDreamy came back from the dead in Grey's Anatomy.. Well, sort of..

Fans will remember when Derek was struck by a truck and tragically died in hospital after being declared brain dead in season 11.

The late McDreamy appeared in a dream sequence during the Season 17 premiere of Grey's Anatomy, which aired last night. Meredith and Derek were reunited once again, albeit momentarily, on a beautiful beach seconds after Meredith collapsed in Grey Sloan Memorial's car park.

This probably made a lot of fans wonder "is Meredith dead?!" Well, ABC aired a preview for the next week's episode and it seems she is alive but lost in her own reverie.

To celebrate the wonderful and unexpected reunion, the Grey's Anatomy Twitter account posted a series of glorious beach shots of Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey shooting the scene - face masks included.

The reunion came at the end of the very emotional two-hour season premiere which was dedicated to frontline healthcare workers.

'Grey's Anatomy' Will Tackle The Coronavirus Pandemic In Season 17

Showrunner Krista Vernoff confirmed earlier this year that the show's writers planned to address the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. She also admitted they considered not addressing the pandemic at all because the show is considered an "escape" from the real world for viewers.

In yesterday's episode Meredith struggled to cope with the mounting Covid-19 related deaths at the hospital. Medical staff and personnel were left to treat patients without enough PPE.

In an interview with Deadline Krista Vernoff, Patrick Dempsey and series stat Ellen Pompeo revealed how McDreamy's big return came to be and teased how long he will stick around. (Spoiler: It's more than the one scene at the end of the first episode!)

"It happened because it was my job to find a way - once we determined that we were doing the pandemic - to also bring joy and escape, and fan candy and all the things that at Grey's Anatomy we give people," explains Vernoff.

Dempsey also revealed what it was like getting back into character. He said: "It was really enjoyable. It was really exciting and fun and it was great to see everybody."
